APFF (Managing Editor, Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies + language teaching)

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor Faculty Fellow (APFF) position in the field of Spanish Peninsular literature and culture. Areas of expertise may range from medieval to contemporary, with specialty and chronological focus open. The APFF’s primary responsibility will be to serve as Managing Editor for the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies with an additional 1:1 course load teaching Spanish language courses in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Our department is composed of a diverse group of scholars who have worked together to create a rigorous and inclusive environment for research and teaching. In addition to literature, history, and philosophy, faculty in our department work in a range of interrelated areas in the field of cultural studies (including archival studies, animal studies, sexuality studies, migration studies, post-colonial studies, and transatlantic studies) while encouraging new approaches to the study of visual culture, print culture, sound, and performance studies.

We are especially interested in applicants whose work challenges the field in terms of geographic, linguistic, and cultural scope; and who see themselves as forming an integral part of a community of scholars that supports NYU’s dedication to Peninsular studies, including the Department’s historic relationship to NYU Madrid, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, and the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies.

The position begins September 1, 2023 with an initial appointment for one year, renewable twice, for a maximum of three years; subject to pending budgetary and administrative approval. Successful candidates should have near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English, since they will teach one class of Spanish language instruction each semester. Editorial experience is highly desirable since the Managing Editor holds primary responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Journal and works hand-in-hand with the Journal’s Co-Editors and Editorial Collective. For a full description of the Managing Editor position, please go to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese website or email the Chair of the Search: jordana.mendelson@nyu.edu.

For a description of the scope and aims of the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, see the Journal’s homepage on the Taylor & Francis website: https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/cjsc20/current

Preference will be given to scholars of Spanish Peninsular literature and culture with a strong teaching and publication record related to cultural studies and who demonstrate the skills required to oversee all areas of editorial production, including editorial management software, peer review protocols, copy editing, and social media. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within five years of the date of appointment.

Application materials: Cover Letter, CV, 1-page Teaching Statement, 1-page Research Statement, Writing Sample (book chapter or published article preferred), Names and Contact Information for 3 References. As diversity is an important part of the NYU mission, in the statement of teaching philosophy, we ask you to provide a brief paragraph telling us how diversity figures into your past and present teaching, research, community engagement, and/or life experience, as well as how you would bring issues of diversity to bear on the leadership, teaching and programming of the program. As part of the application process, candidates who are short-listed will be asked to give a short teaching demonstration and complete a brief editorial exercise in both Spanish and English.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational factors when extending an offer.
