Description of the research project

Railway transportation is generally regarded as a sustainable and attractive mode of transportation in Europe. To keep (inter)national railway systems operating in a reliable and cost-effective manner in the present as well as the future, the development and implementation of novel technologies is needed. Automated Train Operations (ATO) is an example off such a technology where (parts of) train operations are automated to enable novel ways of operating and optimizing train operations.

For novel technologies such as ATO to be considered for implementation, a good understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the technology are needed, as well as the circumstances under which the technology is applied. ATO relies on the development and gradual implementation of several state-of-the-art sensing, signaling and safety technologies for rolling stock and railway infrastructure in multiple European countries. Assessing the value of such large-scale socio-technical changes is not straightforward, given the technical complexity, broad spectrum of tangible and intangible costs and benefits, and the need to account for a wide range of stakeholder needs. The PhD project focuses on the development of generalizable methods and tools for valuating novel railway technologies such as ATO. This includes research on (1) How tangible and intangible costs and benefits can be best modelled and evaluated; (2) How the valuation models and assessments can be co-developed in close collaboration with specialists from international railway organizations; (3) How complexities and uncertainties in such models and evaluations can be managed to arrive at a clear and succinct result; (4) How the process of developing these evaluations can be facilitated; And (5) Providing recommendations for the development of evaluation of migration strategies for the transition to more autonomous forms of railway operations

The research is supported by the European Joint Rail Undertaking of the European Union (see https://rail-research.europa.eu), which allows a knowledge exchange with international railway partners and knowledge institutions.

As a PhD candidate, you will be responsible for carrying out an independent, full-time, 4-year research project that requires the integration of several research areas at the interface between engineering and management. As part of the research project, you will have the opportunity to evaluate your developed methods and tools in practice, together with several partners in the European railway sector. You will be assigned to the Asset Management & Maintenance Engineering (AMME) group, which is part of the Department of Design, Production and Management (DPM) of the Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET). Together with our (inter)national partners and contacts, our group strives to develop state-of-the-art solutions to fundamental and practical challenges in the field of Asset Management and Maintenance Engineering.

Description of the research project

In the rapidly evolving landscape of electricity generation and distribution, enhancing the capacity of existing infrastructure is vital. The IDLEC project at the University of Twente, in collaboration with the company Liander, aims to address this need by exploring ways to safely increase the dynamic load capacity of the electricity grid, from transformers and substations to underground cables. The synergy of the research groups ET-DBM (Dynamics Based Maintenance) and ET-AMME (Asset Management and Maintenance Engineering) will be leveraged. The ET-DBM group will focus on the physics of failures and will design the algorithms for real-time monitoring systems, while ET-AMME will work on the asset management ensuring optimal deployment and utilization of the developed methods.

The Challenge

The goal of this research is to develop a framework (methods, models, monitoring systems) that enables Liander to dynamically load existing infrastructure components by briefly operating them above their nominal design capacity in situations where this can be safely achieved. Setting dynamic thresholds and implementing real-time monitoring of key performance parameters such as current and temperature are crucial in managing the degradation over the life cycle.

In addition, a health monitoring plan is needed to implement maintenance policies for dynamic loading in a timely manner this part of the research is more focused on asset management and how to organize Condition based Maintenance in cross functional teams.

The department of Public Law and Governance (PLG) is looking for 2 PhD candidates who will be working within the project ‘Causal Pattern Analysis of Economic Sovereignty’ (CaPANES), which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant 2021). PLG is a large, diverse and interdisciplinary department, home to nearly 130 academic staff and a range of legal and social science disciplines. You will develop and grow in research, both individually and as part of a team of fourteen legal historians. As PhD candidate in legal history, you will analyze the historical use of sovereignty concepts in cities of commerce. The CaPANES project hypothesizes that in the early modern period cities of commerce, even within states, had foreign relations of their own and made strategic use of legal terms that defined their economic sovereignty. The CaPANES project pursues legal-historical analysis of both the domestic context of cities of commerce and of their interactions with other cities and states. The CaPANES combines qualitative and quantitative methods (social network analysis, modelling), and aims to yield conclusions that are relevant also for discussions on present-day economic sovereignty. The PhD candidates will analyze the interactions between six cities of commerce (Florence, Toulouse, Rouen, Bruges, Southampton and Lübeck). The first PhD position is concerned with Bruges, Southampton and Florence (c. 1400-c. 1520), the second PhD position with Rouen, Lübeck and Toulouse (c. 1400-c. 1550). 20% of the appointment may be dedicated to teaching and/or administration.

Within the framework of an EU-Horizon Europe international project aiming at the development of high energy efficiency thermomagnetic (TM) devices. The doctoral candidate will be involved in: 1)Preparation of novel TM materials. 2) Macroscopic characterization of novel TM materials. 3) Improving the thermal diffusivity of TM materials. During three secondments the student will acquire additional characterization techniques and experiences in materials processing in a commercial setting. Expected Results:
  • Thermo-magnetic materials with high thermal diffusivity and improved mechanical strength.
  • Development of novel materials families beyond the currently known systems.
  • Feedback to the materials modelling on materials properties.
Three secondments are integral part of the project: 1) University Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2 months (thermal diffusivity measurements); 2) Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung, Berlin, Germany, 2 months (mechanical testing); 3) Magneto BV, Delft, The Netherlands, 2 months (3D printing and materials testing). About HEAT4ENERGY HEAT4ENERGY is a 4-years EU-Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network project. The main goal of HEAT4ENERGY is to train a new generation of enablers for the European Energy Transition with the skills needed to assess the potential of new energy technologies. They will acquire these in practice by addressing the challenge of making the first realistic and energy efficient thermomagnetic energy converters for low grade waste heat (<100°C) to electricity and they will learn how to upscale these and bring them to a viable market level. The project offers training for science and technology for energy transition and climate action, as well as transferable and complementary skills and Open Science related training. Through secondments the HEAT4ENERGY PhD students will engage in all fields of materials development for energy, ranging from physics to industrial praxis.

This position is perfectly suited for candidates that possess a profound knowledge of magnetic materials preparation and characterization. You will have ample space to develop your skills and conduct ground-breaking research. When you have a strong research-oriented attitude, good communication skills and the ability to transfer knowledge then you are encouraged to apply. Requirements for the position are:
  • An MSc in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
  • Fundamental knowledge in the field of solid-state physics, crystallography, thermodynamics or solid-state chemistry.
  • Excellent materials preparation skills and/or experience in XRD, electron microscopy, magnetic measurements, thermal characterization, mechanical testing.
  • Excellent command of the English language. A minimum TOEFL total score of 100 and at least 21 points for each section is required. Alternatively, an IELTS total score of 7.0 and at least 6.5 points for each section sub-skill applies to all candidates wanting to pursue a PhD at TU Delft. Native speakers are exempted from the English test requirement, as well as non-native applicants who have obtained an English-taught Master’s degree.
  • MSCA requires candidates have not spent more than 12 month working or studying in The Netherlands within the last 36 month prior to the job appointment.

Eligibility criteria
You ideally have:
  • Strong computational, programming and/or data analysis skills with an IT, BioIT or engineering background.
  • Experience with the development and validation of bioinformatic methods.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatic pipelines for the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and other -omics data
  • Knowledge in several of the following programming languages: Python, R, bash, Perl.

  • Experience in workflow managers (e.g. Nextflow).

Job description:PhD position in "Seasonally resolved ecophysiology of Arctic phytoplankton assemblages under global warming" (m/f/d) Background The Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the global average, which changes ecosystem phenology and productivity. Still, our understanding of Arctic ecological processes is based predominantly on studies conducted during spring and summer, so that many seasonal aspects (e.g. life-cycling, overwintering) and their sensitivity to global change are still poorly understood. The YESSS project aims at better understanding the responses of Arctic coastal ecosystems and their key species to warming, by means of weekly assessments of oceanographic and biological ‘core’ parameters. These in-situ observations are complemented with dedicated season-specific experiments on temperature responses of key species from multiple trophic levels (phytoplankton, seaweeds, mollusks, echinoderms and fish). This PhD project will investigate the interaction between environmental conditions and seasonal variations in key traits of Arctic natural phytoplankton assemblages. Further, seasonally-resolved experiments on the temperature sensitivity of phytoplankton in different successional and physiological stages (e.g. pre-bloom, spring bloom, post-bloom, overwintering) will be conducted to understand the effects of Arctic warming and to identify physiological bottlenecks and detect potential tipping points. Tasks
  • Join five >6 week-long expeditions to a coastal Arctic research station in a small team with a diverse range of tasks
  • Conduct weekly in-situ sampling from small boats in all seasons
  • Plan, conduct and analyze seasonally-resolved experiments on the thermal scope of Arctic natural phytoplankton assemblages
  • Perform physiological assays with natural phytoplankton assemblages to measure rates of important processes (e.g. primary production, respiration, grazing losses)
  • Work in a larger consortium to understand which seasons are most sensitive to climate change effects on Arctic coastal ecosystem functioning
  • Present your finding on international conference and publish in peer-reviewed journals

With approximately 1,500 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth.

In the context of the energy transition and the associated phase-out of coal and nuclear energy, a considerably more intensive use of the underground will be necessary, e.g. for energy storage, usage of deep geothermal systems, or the sequestration of CO2 into the subsurface. Another challenge in the future is the long-term safe storage of high-level nuclear waste into a deep geological repository. These future new and changed utilisation concepts place new demands on the integrity and long-term stability of georeservoirs both directly related to the stress state and its human-induced stress changes.

In this research project, we are offering a PhD position for an ambitious and motivated student to undertake forward 3‑D geomechanical-numerical modelling of the contemporary stress state of the subsurface on reservoir scale. In particular we focus on new concepts to calibrate models using data from borehole logs (FMI, UBI, caliper etc.) as well as Formation Integrity, Leak-Off and Micro-Hydraulic Fracture tests in an integrative way. In particular we would like to explore the minimum amount of data needed to receive a robust stress prediction for a safe usage of the subsurface. The candidate will be part of the joint project SpannEnD funded by the BGE (federal company for radioactive waste disposal). The partners of the project are the TU Darmstadt (Prof. Andreas Henk, Dr. Karsten Reiter) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Prof. Frank Schilling, Dr. Birgit Müller).

Your responsibilities:

  • Application, analysis and further processing of different stress information data sets
  • Application and expansion of our modelling workflow that is based on the commercial software packages Hypermesh (discretization), Abaqus (Finite Element Solver), and Tecplot 360 EX (visualization).
  • Construction and simulation of generic models and a case study using a 3D model of a deep geological repository for high-level nuclear waste from our Swiss partner NAGRA
  • Method development for the extension and improvement of model calibration
  • Publication of research results in international journals and at conferences
  • Collaboration with national and international partners

Your qualifications:

  • Master`s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, geology, geotechnics or physics

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN) invites applications from qualified candidates for a SSHRC Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) appointment in Disability Justice.  The chair, whose appointment will be in sociology, will be at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor beginning July 1, 2024. The ideal candidate will have a PhD with a focus on Disability Justice and a record of strong SSHRC funding. Disability justice centres the transformative role of disability politics, cultures, and communities to collectively dismantle ableism and build more accessible and socially just relations in the world. Emerging out of US activism done by disabled people of colour and disabled queer and trans people in the early 2000s, the unique knowledge produced by disability justice approaches is beneficial to disabled people, policymakers, not-for-profit sectors, social movements, and scholarly work in critical disability and social movement studies and beyond. Reconceptualizing disability as an intersecting social, cultural, and political phenomenon, the CRC in Disability Justice will engage with the ingenuity of Carleton’s emerging interdisciplinary network of critical disability studies scholars and accessibility experts, as well as draw on community partners, artists, and activists in the national capital region and beyond. Disability justice issues remain under-examined both locally, nationally, and internationally.  To redress this, the Chair will build on Carleton’s excellent research reputation as a leader in accessibility and critical disability studies to expand its internationally competitive research program to include disability justice social movements, cultures, scholarship, and activism. About the Academic Unit

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology (https://carleton.ca/socanth/) is one of the oldest and most highly regarded departments within its disciplines in Canada. It has a large graduate program with MA and PhD degrees in both Anthropology and in Sociology.  At the undergraduate level, it offers B.A. degrees in both Sociology and Anthropology and a Bachelor of Global and International Studies with specializations in “Social Change and Inequality” and “Culture and Power,” as well as a Minor in Community Engagement. About the Role

This is a fixed term position for a Research Fellow in Geography to join the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences on an exciting research project funded by the Australian Research Council via a Discovery Project grant.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Research Fellow to join our dynamic team in the realm of Software Engineering. As a Research Fellow, you will conduct independent research, leading to the preparation and publication of research outcomes in high-impact software engineering conferences and journals. You will be located in the School of Computing and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) and will be expected to be an active member of the School, collaborating with other researchers. You may undertake some teaching and research supervision directly related to your area of research, as required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to teaching, training, scientific mentoring and supervision of students;
  • Independently plan and carry out research on the nominated research project and work towards completion of the aims of the project;
  • Develop effective timelines and milestones based on goals of the research programme;

Who We Are Looking For

To be successful in this role, you will be a highly motivated researcher with a background in Computer science or an allied field, capable of conducting independent research aligned with team and project goals and producing impactful research outcomes. You should possess excellent communication skills, both in written and verbal forms, to effectively collaborate with other researchers and communicate research findings. You should possess strong time-management and organisational abilities to balance independent research, teaching, and supervision responsibilities. Additionally, adaptability and openness to new ideas are crucial soft skills to thrive in a dynamic academic environment.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in Software Engineering, or closely related discipline;
  • A record of quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences commensurate with opportunity;
  • Ability to perform independent research and a commitment to interdisciplinary research
