Spanning virtually every age and region of the world, the Yale University collections are among the deepest and widest ranging of any university. They form an integral part of Yale’s mission of teaching and research and are accessible in various ways to students, scholars, and the public alike.

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music supports short-term fellowships in Yale collections for research on the aural, material, visual, ritual, and textual cultures of religions. These fellowships are restricted to work in Yale’s non-circulating collections, particularly at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the special collections of the Divinity Library, the Collection of Musical Instruments, the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, and the Yale University Art Gallery. The fellowships are residential for one to three months. Researchers must free themselves of most other work during the fellowship period and are expected to reside in the vicinity of Yale. Yale faculty, staff, and students are not eligible for these fellowships.

Fellowship Details

Fellowships are available both for doctoral students who are at the dissertation stage, and for any other scholars who hold the Ph.D or equivalent terminal degree. They are granted for a consecutive one- to three-month period at any time during the year (academic year or summer) when the collections are open to the public.

Those accepted as fellows will have access to all of Yale’s libraries and the portion of the collections they have proposed to research, where they will also be given space to conduct their work. Fellows are encouraged also to involve themselves in the life of the university during their stays.  Unfortunately, Short-term fellows will not have access to circulating collections in Yale’s library system.

Scholars must free themselves of other teaching or work responsibilities during the course of the fellowship and may not hold other fellowships simultaneously. Split fellowships will not be granted, and only one application per candidate in a given academic year will be allowed. Please note that attendance will be monitored and grants will be adjusted to reflect shortened fellowship periods. Only J-1 visas will be granted to fellows requiring immigration assistance to undertake research.

Eligibility and Support

Applicants for an ISM Short-term Fellowship must hold a terminal degree in their field or be in the final stage of dissertation research and writing. The ISM provides a grant toward round-trip travel (economy class) from the candidate’s home to New Haven and an honorarium for living expenses of $3,000 per month for doctoral candidates (ABD), or $4,000 per month for any scholar holding the doctorate. Fellows are responsible for locating and funding their own housing.

The Klarman Fellowships in the College of Arts & Sciences provide postdoctoral opportunities to early-career scholars of outstanding talent, initiative and promise. Among the most selective of its kind in the country, the program offers independence from constraints of particular grants, enabling the recipients to devote themselves to frontline, innovative research without being tied to specific outcomes or teaching responsibilities.

Recipients may conduct research in any discipline in the College: natural, quantitative, and social sciences, humanistic inquiry, the creative arts, and emerging fields that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. Fellows are selected from a global pool of applicants based on their research accomplishments, potential for future contributions, and alignment of scholarly interests with those of their proposed faculty mentors in Arts & Sciences. The candidates will also be assessed on how their work can benefit from and contribute to the momentum in strategic research areas in the College.

“Klarman Fellowships offer a tremendous boon to the next generation of scholars, thanks to the elevated levels of creative freedom, financial support, cross-disciplinary stimuli and professional uplift they provide.” ~Ray Jayawardhana, the Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences

Klarman Fellowships are made possible by Seth Klarman, a 1979 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Beth Schultz Klarman. Seth Klarman is CEO of the Boston-based Baupost Group, LLC, and Beth Klarman is president of The Klarman Family Foundation.

Eligibility

Klarman Fellowships are awarded to emerging researchers of exceptional promise in any of the disciplines in the College of Arts & Sciences at Cornell University. Competitive applications will demonstrate the candidate’s capacity for original thought, combined with intellectual rigor and discipline to investigate their ideas in meaningful ways. A tenure-track or tenured faculty member holding a current, primary appointment in the College of Arts & Sciences must agree to serve as the faculty host for the candidate, as confirmed by a host faculty sponsorship form at the time of application. The faculty host agrees to mentor and support the candidate throughout the entire fellowship period. Applicants may also have a Cornell faculty co-host. The co-host must be a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at Cornell University and may be appointed in any Cornell school or college.

Note that a particular faculty member can sponsor a maximum of two applicants in a given application cycle. It is the applicant’s responsibility to identify and communicate with potential hosts well ahead of the application deadline. Additionally, each applicant should arrange for letters of recommendation to be submitted by three references, one of whom must normally be the applicant’s primary doctoral advisor.

Awardees must have earned the doctoral degree within two years of beginning the Klarman Fellowship (i.e., for 2024 recipients, no earlier than 1 May 2022). Candidates with more than two years of postdoctoral experience, and those who received their PhD from Cornell or have held any position at Cornell for more than six months at the time of application are not eligible. Candidates who received an undergraduate or master's degree from Cornell are, however, welcome to apply. Awardees may not simultaneously hold any other paid or unpaid position during the term of the appointment. Prior to the start of the fellowship, candidates will be asked to provide proof that their doctoral degree has been conferred.

Innovative technologies like artificial intelligence, new energy resources, and digital transitions in healthcare and safety, provide examples of developments that are often presented as solutions to current and future societal challenges. These developments raise questions such as: How do people react to and make sense of innovative technologies? How do new technologies shape the way people and organizations behave and interact? How do they reshape the public domain and policy directions? Technological developments ask for insights into the diverse changes and transitions across many levels, from individual behaviors to organizational processes and social policies. As new technologies also have unforeseen, unintended, or uncontrollable outcomes, we need insight into when they contribute to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities and when they are counterproductive. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is needed to better understand how innovative technologies facilitate or work against societal transitions and behavior change across time. As part of the Sector Plans in Social Sciences and Humanities, we offer 4 new talented colleagues an exciting opportunity for co-developing such an approach.

Each colleague will be appointed in one of the four sections of the Department of Human and Institutional Behavior. These are Communication Science; Psychology, Health & Technology; Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety; and Public Administration. Across the sections, you will work closely together as a team to create impact in research, education, and society in this exciting field. You can bring in your own interests and expertise but as a group you will develop a multidisciplinary research line on technological developments in relation to societal transitions and behavior change. As a teacher you will contribute to modules in bachelor and master programs of Psychology, Communication science, and Public administration. You will outline research topics for Bachelor and Master theses that you will supervise. To create societal impact, you will develop strong collaborations with stakeholders in the field.

The Department of Human and Institutional Behavior at the University of Twente provides many opportunities to develop your talents as researcher and teacher. Clearly rooted in disciplinary expertise in psychology, communication science, and public administration, the department aims to integrate individual, (inter)organizational, institutional, and societal perspectives on technologies of societal transitions and behavior change. We invest in professionals and academics of the future through our bachelor and master programs of psychology, communication science, and public administration as well as in post-master life-long learning activities. To create scientific impact, there is strong collaboration across the faculty and the university in interdisciplinary research domains.

To create societal impact we closely work together with citizens, professionals, managers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers in designing, evaluating, and implementing comprehensive technology-based solutions that support behavior change and societal transitions towards inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities. Last but not least, the facilities of the BMS Lab and the Design Lab provide innovative technological support for our research, teaching, and societal collaboration.

Your profile

  • You hold a PhD in Public Administration, Communication Science, Psychology.
  • You have an interest in the topic of behavior change, organizational change, and/or transformation of the public domain.
  • You show vision and ambitious drive (seeing opportunities and possibilities).
  • You have expertise with multidisciplinary approaches and are able to have a leading role in multidisciplinary research and in building collaborations between various disciplines.
  • You have a specific interest for technological innovation in the context of social science.
  • You are a passionate teacher focusing on multidisciplinary approaches, preferably holding a University Teaching Qualification and are able to teach and supervise students in educational programs of communication, psychology and/or public administration.
  • You can underscore your talent with a track record in peer-reviewed publications, presentations and grant-acquisition.
  • You are a team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • You are fluent in English (C1) and a good command of Dutch (B2 to C1) is preferable.

Our offer

  • We offer an appointment as assistant professor. After a one year fixed-term position, there is, after evaluation, perspective on a permanent position.
  • The starting date is flexible; we are looking for the best candidates. Preferably between October 2023 and February 2024.
  • Starting salary between € 4.332,- to € 6.737,- gross per month based on your experience (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • An additional holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • A solid pension scheme.
  • A high degree of responsibility and independence.
  • Excellent support for professional and personal development.
  • A dynamic, cooperative work environment with entrepreneurial and enthusiastic collegues.
  • A high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff is strongly encouraged.
  • Minimum of 29 holidays in case of full-time employment.
  • Possibilities to save up holidays for sabbatical leave.

RESEARCHER PROFILE: PhD/ R1: First stage Researcher

RESEARCH FIELD(S)1: Physics, thermal characterization, radiative properties, fusion

MAIN SUB RESEARCH FIELD OR DISCIPLINES1: Physics, Engineering

JOB /OFFER DESCRIPTION

Measurements on components subjected to high heat flux and special conditions will be characterized from a structural, chemical and thermal point of view. The PhD student will have to become familiar with the scientific setups for carrying out all these measurements. First, the emissivity of the surfaces will be measured in the IUSTI laboratory thanks to an existing experimental bench that will have to be upgraded, in particular to access the spectral emissivity. Then, structural and spectroscopic surface analyses will be realized in the PIIM laboratory and the electron microscopy platform. For the structural part, AFM, confocal microscopy, SEM and possibly X-ray microtomography will be used for the characterization of the surface state (deposit, crack networks, microcracks…). In the case of the surface composition and the presence of oxide layers, EDX and Raman spectroscopy can be used. All these analyses will have to be performed both on samples prepared in the laboratory, in particular to study the influence of the thickness of an oxide layer, and on components that have undergone transformations in the WEST tokamak. The aim of the thesis will be to link the emissivity evolutions measured in-situ (and also post-mortem) to the plasma scenarios. Comparison with plasma wall interaction modelling (such as SOLEDGE-EIREN + ERO2.0) will help to understand the full map of emissivity (impurity transport in the edge plasma) as well as local distribution patterns (local erosion and redeposition).

Micropollutants have been identified as contaminants of concern present in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. They are not effectively removed in conventional municipal WWTPs because the WWTPs were not originally designed to remove these contaminants. The Dutch water partners are currently researching innovative technologies to remove these micropollutants through an extensive Innovation Program initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Dutch water authorities and managed by STOWA. Wetsus and partners have been investigating an optimized Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) treatment line as a promising tertiary treatment technology to improve micropollutants removal at WWTPs, both at lab- and pilot-scale. However, the influence of parameters such as reactor design, oxygen levels, backwashing regime and pre-treatment of the influent waters needs to be further investigated, especially in a real-world setting, i.e., using real wastewater effluent.

Research challenge The BAC filters investigated in our work combine adsorption, oxidation, biodegradation, and precipitation processes. The research challenge of this new project is to quantify and understand these interdependent removal processes, to translating this knowledge into a filter design and operation optimised specifically for micropollutant removal.

An example of a parameter that needs to be optimised is biofilm thickness. In BAC filters, the surface of the granules is covered with a biofilm. This biofilm is essential for micropollutants degradation, as the biofilm matrix binds the micropollutants which are then degraded via the action of bacterial exoenzymes. However, uncontrolled biofilm growth results in clogging and mass transfer limitations. Excessive biofilm accumulation can be controlled by backwashing and by controlling the dissolved oxygen levels. Another design consideration is how to minimise detrimental effects of the bulk particulate and dissolved organics also present in the water, e.g., by applying pre-treatment of the influent water which can remove recalcitrant organics.

Your assignment The main objective of the project is to try to predict the effect of key design and operational parameters on the micropollutant removal events in BAC filters, by studying the underlying mechanisms. To achieve this goal, your will work with both lab and pilot scale BAC filters, using different matrices and model compounds. In addition, the work will comprise physico-chemical and microbiological characterization of carbon granules and the attached biofilms.

Your profile We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with an MSc degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent. Additional knowledge of municipal wastewater, adsorption technology bioprocess engineering and/or biofilms (microbiology) is desirable. You are able to work in a multidisciplinary, international team. You are fluent in written and spoken English.

Keywords: Biodegradation, biofilms, granular activated carbon (GAC), adsorption, oxidation

Supervisory Team: TBD.

Project partners: Advanced Water Treatment

Only applications that are complete, in English, and submitted via the application webpage before the deadline will be considered eligible.
