About the UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH)
UNU-IIGH is one of the 14 research and training institutes that make up the UNU system. UNU-IIGH was established in 2005 with the mission of advancing an evidence-based policy on key issues related to sustainable development and global health. UNU-IIGH aims to strengthen the knowledge and decision-making capacities of United Nations agencies, United Nations programs and member States for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
UNU-IIGH is hosted in Malaysia, thanks to an endowment from the Malaysian government. The status of UNU-IIGH in Malaysia is that of a resident agency of the United Nations. However, its mandate is global, with an emphasis on global health priorities related to sustainable development in low- and middle-income countries. As a neutral organizer and leveraging its position within the United Nations, UNU-IIGH works with a network of academic, political and civil society experts to serve as a platform for critical reflection and exchange of knowledge and tools to influence policy and build capacity.
Responsibilities
As part of its current strategy (2019-2023), UNU-IIGH has given priority to generating relevant policy analyzes on gender and health. As part of this work, he launches a Policy Hub to provide a platform for collaboration, practice-based learning and co-production of critical analysis and evidence, as well as to negotiate new partnerships and alliances to expand sources to support dissemination and translation of policies.
The researcher will lead a research program as part of the Hub to review, consolidate and translate evidence on effective approaches to promote gender equality in health policies and programs. Under the direction of the director and the person responsible for the pillar, the research fellow:
- contribute effectively to the Institute for Gender and Health Policy and to the publication of research results relevant to policy
- provide technical and managerial leadership for the successful implementation of research and political engagement activities
- establish and manage partnerships with researchers and external partners
- ensure that the project produces specified results according to the required quality standard and on time and within budget
- participate in international research, policy and awareness raising events
- supervise postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, junior researchers and interns
- perform other tasks assigned by management
Qualifications and experience required
Qualifications and experience required include:
- a doctorate in public health or a related field
- a minimum of 7 years of increasing professional experience, including the management of research and training programs
- demonstrated ability to conduct and manage research activities in an international environment
- evidence from academic and peer-reviewed publications on gender and health
- demonstrated experience in international research and political commitment in areas related to the institute’s research program
- proof of experience in teaching and research supervision
- excellent verbal and written skills in English in a range of communication formats (academic publications, program reports, guidance notes). Knowledge of another official UN language an asset
- history of competitive funding and resource mobilization from national and international funding agencies
- excellent team spirit with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity

This position gives entitlement to annual leave of 2.5 working days per month (a total of 30 days of paid annual leave).
Contract length
This is a full-time, fixed-term contract based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The initial appointment will be for a period of one (1) year with the possibility of renewal for a fixed term, subject to funding and satisfactory work performance. The mandatory retirement age for United Nations personnel is 65 years.
The staff of the United Nations University are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Rector and may be assigned to one of the activities or functions of the United Nations University.
