About the International Institute of the World University for Global Health (UNU-IIGH)

The International Institute of the United Nations University for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) is one of the 14 research and training institutes that make up the think tanks of the UNU system. UNU-IIGH was established in 2005 with the mission of advancing an evidence-based policy on key issues related to sustainable development and global health. UNU-IIGH aims to strengthen the knowledge and decision-making capacities of United Nations agencies, United Nations programs and member States for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

As a neutral organizer and leveraging its position within the United Nations, UNU-IIGH works with a network of academic, political and civil society experts to serve as a platform for critical reflection and exchange of knowledge and tools to influence policy and build consensus. .

Responsibilities

UNU-IIGH postdoctoral fellows are within five (5) years of obtaining their doctorate or professional doctorate degree. The postdoctoral fellowship offers the possibility of extending their career beyond the university research environment to engage in the application, translation and dissemination of policies. UNU-IIGH provides an excellent multicultural environment for interaction with academics from different countries and from diverse educational backgrounds.

The  2019-2023 strategy for the UNU-IIGH  transfers the institute’s work force of global health projects led by researchers to work pillars focused on priorities and policies. The mission of the institute is to build knowledge and decision-making capacity by United Nations agencies, United Nations programs and member states on global health issues. The goal of UNU-IIGH is to advance evidence-based policy development on critical issues related to sustainable development and public health. The strategy is implemented through three pillars of work:

  1. Translate evidence into politics
  2. Generate relevant analyzes for gender and health policies
  3. Capacity building for local decision-making

To this end, we are looking for postdoctoral researchers who will work with UNU-IIGH in these three areas.

The postdoctoral fellowship is open to applicants who demonstrate that they can contribute to the institute’s ongoing research, policy implementation and capacity building projects. In addition, candidates will have the opportunity to direct areas of work.

Qualifications and experience required

Qualifications and experience required include:

  • applicants must be within five (5) years of obtaining a doctorate in public health or a related discipline
  • professional experience in research, policy or programming in public health
  • research design experience
  • proven experience in quantitative and / or qualitative research techniques is desirable
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • excellent time management skills
  • applicants must have an analytical approach to define research questions relevant to policy

Other desirable skills include:

  • experience in large-scale and interdisciplinary knowledge acquisition
  • demonstrated ability to perform data analysis and interpretation
  • familiarity with research and evaluation of scientific literature
  • experience writing manuscripts, white papers, progress reports and grant applications
  • familiarity with gender-sensitive research and / or programming
  • experience in implementation research and / or health policy and systems research
  • experience in leading capacity building efforts and organizing workshops

Remuneration

It is a job under a personnel service contract (PSA) with a monthly salary of 3,000 USD. The successful candidate will not hold the status of international civil servant and will not be an “official” within the meaning of the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. No relocation allowance applies.

This position gives entitlement to annual leave of 2.5 working days per month (a total of 30 days of paid annual leave) and to private health insurance.

Contract length

It is a full time job. The duration of the initial contract will be 12 months, which can be extended for an additional 12 months.
