The University of California and Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) invite nominations and applications for the position of Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (www.llnl.gov). LLNL is a national security laboratory managed by LLNS for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The Laboratory was established in 1952 and is located 49 miles southeast of San Francisco in Livermore, California.
LLNS is a limited liability company, the members of which include the University of California, Bechtel National, Inc., BWX Technologies, Inc., and AECOM Energy & Construction, Inc. (an Amentum company). The Laboratory Director is the President of the LLC, reports to the LLC Board of Governors, and is responsible for overall execution of DOE/NNSA’s programs and the broader national security mission at LLNL. The Director leads a workforce of more than 6,700 employees and manages an annual operating budget of approximately $2.3 billion.
National security is the defining responsibility of the Laboratory, focusing on the Nation’s and DOE’s top priorities: ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, preventing and countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction including nuclear, chemical, biological, cyber threats, and ensuring the nation’s energy security.
The Director sets the strategic vision of the Laboratory and exercises broad delegated powers to ensure successful execution of programs and operations, to advance science and technology for the nation, and to maintain an outstanding and diverse workforce. The Director leads the development and implementation of the Laboratory’s scientific vision, goals, and objectives and serves as the Laboratory’s highest-level liaison with the DOE, the NNSA, the LLC Board, the University of California, and other government, public, and private organizations. The Director is the ultimate lead for the roles, responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of Laboratory management and therefore exercises overall leadership and administration of the Laboratory’s programs and operations, including the definition of their technical aspects, negotiation of their size and content, and execution of these programs with the expectation of highest quality. Special responsibilities include an integrated safety and security management program for the entire institution and especially the high-hazard facilities ranging from nuclear materials, high explosives, to biological agents, and an integrated security program for many levels of highly sensitive information.
A unique responsibility of the LLNL Director, shared with the Directors of Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, is to provide the U.S. President, through the Secretaries of Energy and Defense, an annual institutional assessment of the state of the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile in terms of safety, security, and effectiveness, and whether confidence in the stockpile can be maintained without a nuclear test.
The Director must ensure that the Laboratory’s programs anticipate, meet, and support national security needs and apply science and technology to the important problems of our time. The Director will be required to provide technical briefings on scientific and national security matters to policy leaders and others in the Executive and Legislative branches of the Federal Government.
The Laboratory’s primary mission and exceptional capabilities in high performance computing, lasers, weapons application/effects, physics, chemistry, materials science, high-energy-density science, and engineering enable other programs in advanced defense technologies, energy, environment, biosciences and human health, and basic science. The Director will ensure establishment of an appropriate strategy for the development and execution of interagency mission programs that leverage, and are synergistic with, the Laboratory’s core missions. The Director must have a commitment and ability to lead cooperative integration of programs with Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories and other facilities as well as programmatic efforts across the NNSA national security complex. The Director must foster performance excellence and diversity in the Laboratory’s workforce.
Candidates should have demonstrated success in leading and managing large science-based programs and complex organizations, and should have a distinguished record of scientific and technical accomplishments. Strong leadership skills are required, including the ability to gain the confidence of key leaders, decision makers, scientists, and operations staff, and the ability to develop strategic relationships and partnerships with key constituents from a variety of national and international organizations. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated substantial management responsibility in a mission-oriented, multi-disciplinary R&D institution. Significant management experience is needed to ensure that programs and support functions achieve compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and LLC policies and to ensure that LLNL operates as an effective member of the regional community.

Required Clearance Level: DOE Q clearance and SCI access. The successful candidate will be required to complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test and will be subject to random drug testing while employed by LLNS. If the candidate holds multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), he/she may be required to renounce his/her non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE Q clearance will be processed/granted.
