Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Our Laboratory for Functional Polymers offers a PhD position in the field of

Plasmonic nanoparticle-enhanced near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that emit in the visible are a proven technology. In contrast, OLEDs that emit in the near-infrared (NIR) range have remained a fundamental scientific challenge. The reason for this is that the photoluminescence quantum yield of organic dyes decreases exponentially as the emission shifts to longer wavelengths – the so-called energy gap law. In this project, we aim to circumvent the emission limitations of NIR dyes by employing a fine-tuned plasmonic enhancement strategy. The project takes place in a highly interdisciplinary environment and involves partner laboratories dedicated to chemical synthesis and theoretical calculations. The potential impact of high-performing NIR-OLEDs is huge, with untapped next generation applications in through-space optical communications, machine vision or medical imaging.

PhD position in the field of next level OLEDs (a)

Your tasks

  • Structural and optical characterization of dye-at-nanoparticle emitter films
  • Fabrication and characterization of NIR-OLEDs
  • Optimization of NIR-OLEDs, supported by opto-electrical device simulation

Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who wants to pursue cutting-edge research at world-class level. Required qualifications include a Master’s degree in physics or materials science with a solid background in physics. Experience with organic/hybrid film device fabrication, OLED characterization and photoluminescence spectroscopy is advantageous. We are looking for a curiosity driven team player with excellent English communication and writing skills.

Our offer

We offer a highly interdisciplinary environment and close partnership between Empa (synthesis of NIR dyes, OLED fabrication), ETHZ (synthesis of nanoparticles) and EPFL (theoretical foundations). Located in the Zürich area, the Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is planned for a duration of 4 years. The official project start is October 2023. This fulltime position is available upon agreement. The PhD candidate will be integrated in the doctoral program of EPF Lausanne. Thesis advisor is Prof. Frank Nüesch.
