The SI Scholarship Pioneering Women in STEM is an academic scholarship provided for full-time, one- or two-year, master’s studies in designated programmes in Sweden.

Sweden offers a unique blend of world-class education and cutting-edge innovation, with sustainability at its core. The scholarship covers a wide range of English-taught master’s programmes focusing on one or more core areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Through the scholarship, the Swedish Institute (SI) aim to create a more diverse and equal STEM-field as well as develop a network of future global leaders that will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and drive the development of their home countries forward.   

The scholarship is open to female citizens from the eligible countries and applies to designated master’s programs starting in the autumn semester. A full list of eligible master’s programs will be published on November 1, 2024. 

Below you will find more information about our requirements and instructions for applying to the Pioneering Women in STEM sholarship. Note! The information may be subjected to changes.

Key dates

  • 12 December 15.00 (CET): Live webinar about the SI Scholarships, find out more at our  Facebook event
  • 15 October 2024–15 January 2025: Application round to Swedish master’s programmes through University Admissions open.
  • 3 February 2025: Deadline for application fee and submission of supporting documentation to University Admissions.
  • 27 March 2025: University Admissions announcement day.
  • 24 April 2025: SI Scholarship announcement day.

What’s included

The SI scholarship Pioneering women in STEM is a competitive fully-funded scholarship that includes:

  • Full tuition fee coverage. The fee is paid directly by SI to your Swedish university in the beginning of each semester.
  • A monthly stipend of SEK 12,000 to cover your living expenses throughout the study period.
  • A travel grant of SEK 15,000. This is a one-time payment and does not apply for students already living in Sweden.
  • Membership in the SI Network for Future Global Professionals (NFGP) – a platform to help you grow professionally and build a network while in Sweden.
  • After your scholarship period has ended, you become a member of the SI Alumni Network. As a member, you get a unique opportunity for continued networking and professional development.

The scholarship does not…

  • Include an insurance. We recommend checking with your university to learn more about what insurance coverage they provide for international students.
  • Provide additional grants for family members.
  • Cover the application fee to University Admissions.
  • Allow changes to the study programme. We are only able to support you through the awarded master’s programme.
  • Allow extensions or changes to the awarded scholarship period.

Criteria

Country of citizenship

To apply for the scholarship you must be a female citizen of one of the 10 eligible countries.

University Admissions

You must follow the steps of University Admissions and be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programmes on the day of admissions announcements.

Previous degrees or residence in Sweden

If you have already been awarded an SI Scholarship or a university degree in Sweden, you are not eligable to apply for this scholarship.

Country of citizenship

Female citizens of the following countries are eligable to apply to the SI Scholarship Pioneering Women in STEM: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam.

  • You must be a citizen of one of the eligible countries, however, you do not need to reside in the country at the time of the application.
  • If you have dual citizenship and both are eligible for SI scholarship, you should choose only one citizenship when applying for the scholarship. Applicants who use their dual citizenship to submit more than one application will have all applications disqualified.
  • If your country of citizenship is not listed below, we suggest that you apply for SI Scholarship for Global Professionals or look for other scholarships on Study in Sweden’s scholarship database.
  • You are not eligible if you have a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship*, a Swedish permanent residence permit or a temporary work- and residence permit based on work or on family ties with a citizen of Sweden/EU/EEA country who has a temporary or permanent right of residence in Sweden or have dual citizenship in countries not listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients 2025-2026.

Eligible master’s programmes

The scholarship is available for designated master’s programmes in STEM, focusing on one or more core areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Find the full list of eligible master’s programmes for the academic year 2025/2026 here.

University Admissions

Admissions to Swedish university and colleges are managed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education through their portal University Admissions. In order to be eligible for the SI scholarship you must:

  • Be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities. Find out if you are liable for tuition fees here.
  • Have paid the application fee for master’s programmes on time. The payment is made to University Admissions.
  • Be admitted (or conditionally admitted) to one of the eligible master’s programmes on the day of admissions announcements. You can only be awarded a scholarship for the master’s programme you are admitted to in March 2025. Master’s programmes to which you are listed as a reserve cannot be considered. There are no scholarships available for late admissions.

Previous degrees or residence in Sweden

In order to be eligible for the SI scholarship you must:

  • Not currently be enrolled in a master’s programme at a Swedish university.
  • Have yet to be awarded an SI scholarship or a degree from a Swedish university.
  • Not have resided in Sweden for more than two years before the scholarship application.
