School of Aerospace Transport and Manufacturing   Centre for Digital Engineering and Manufacturing   Research Fellow in Extended Reality (XR)   Fixed Term Contract for 18 months   Full time starting salary is normally £37,337 per annum   Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire   We welcome applications from talented XR developers to join our research team to develop the next generation of training delivery for battery manufacture.   About the Role You will focus on developing extended reality (XR) capability and VR/AR demonstrators to transform the training process for battery manufacture in the automotive industry. The project convenes regional academic, local government and industrial experts to deliver a new and innovative battery manufacturing L2 & L3 training programme for the West Midlands.   Extended Reality (XR), which is the focus for this role, is the case where digital data is superimposed directly into a user’s real-world visual field. XR is a fast-growing technology that is becoming an attractive form of communication in manufacturing and maintenance, particularly for the presentation of work instructions for training. You will contribute to conducting further research to evaluate the potential performance improvements that XR and training can offer. One of the industrial use case providers will be Jaguar Land Rover.   In computer science, the contributions of this Research Fellow role will be built around new methods of applying augmented reality to complex manufacturing and maintenance systems. You will be expected to develop new methods for:
  • Data collection using XR
  • Data & optimization for providing guidance using XR
  • Data integration from multiple sensors
  • Accurate overlay of information
  • Visualising information
  The specific focus on the notion of training effectiveness will inform academic knowledge in design and evaluation of virtual/augmented reality systems, with particular contribution towards our goal to enable a seamless training system to update in near-real time, to reflect the status of the digital manufacturing environment.   You will investigate visualisation requirements for digital technologies, using valid and reliable techniques to represent and predict real world human-technology interaction, increasing efficiency and effectiveness of product and process design, manufacture and maintenance.   About You You will be educated to doctoral level (or close to completion) in a relevant subject and have experience of developing extended reality demonstrators with AR/VR technology.  With excellent software design and development skills you will be able to contribute immediately to the project objectives.  Your expertise in effective training methods and knowledge of manufacturing processes will be an advantage.   About Us As a specialist postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships are creating leaders in technology and management globally. Electrochromic devices are multilayer systems that contain the electrochromic species, the ionic conductor, the electronic conductors and the substrates. The research fellow will be responsible for identifying the best electrochromic materials to use for the construction of the respective devices as well as the best system for the construction of the electrolytic layer. All systems will be characterized by spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry. Subsequently, the research fellow will take care of the construction, characterization and implementation of the electrochromic devices and will proceed with the main functional tests. Photolithography will be the main technique with which electrochromic devices will be created in order to guarantee a homogeneous thickness even in large-sized devices

The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt am Main seeks to fill a position for the interdisciplinary project MORE STEP - Mobility at risk: Sustaining the Mongolian Steppe Ecosystem:

Researcher (m/f/d) MSc or PhD in Ecosystem Modelling

 (full-time position / part time options are available)

The MORE STEP project is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research project of Mongolian and German partners funded by BMBF. The main aim is to bring social and ecological sciences together to identify societal drivers that can lead to an ecological tipping point of the Mongolian steppe ecosystem. The objective is the early identification including possible consequences for nature and society. The project particularly emphasizes the importance of mobility of wildlife and livestock in the context of societal change and seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the Mongolian Steppe ecosystem.

The applicant for the position here should integrate grazing into the Dynamic Global Vegetation Model LPJ-GUESS in order to assess i.) where grazing by Mongolian gazelles and livestock might be unstainable because too much of the available vegetation productivity is consumed and ii.) how climate change might influence the carrying capacity of the steppe for large herbivores. The applicant can built upon recent model developments for the integration of moving gazelles into LPJ-GUESS (Stratmann et al. 2023, published in Ecology).

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To integrate a simplified livestock module into our coupled vegetation-herbivore model
  • To develop scenarios until 2050 for future vegetation change and forage availability under different climate change and grazing scenarios
  • To identify areas where climate change might alter the capacity of the steppe to sustain herbivores (wildlife and livestock)
  • Contribute to dissemination activities towards policy makers and stakeholders
  • Disseminate results in scientific journals and more stakeholder-oriented formats

Place of employment:         Frankfurt (Hesse)

Working hours:                   full-time position (40 weekly working hours / part time options are available)

Type of contract:                The contract shall ideally start as of November 2023 and is limited until 30 September 2025

We are looking for higly motivated candidates to apply for a PhD position (DC1) within EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA DN) GAP ("image-Guided computational and experimental Analysis of fractured Patients").   General information Politecnico di Milano is seeking a PhD candidate to be offered scholarship for a position within the framework EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA DN) GAP . The candidate will be enrolled within the Doctoral Programme in Mechanical Engineering - Department of Mechanical Engineering. The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to promote and develop culture, research and innovation in its sectors of reference, but also in new fields deemed to become more and more important in society and in our present background. For example, it deals with sustainability, clean energy and power technologies, bio and smart materials. Please look at www.mecc.polimi.it for more details on the type of activities we undertake.   General overview of GAP MSCA project Age-related bone fractures are a major health concern, resulting worldwide in high economic and psycho-social burden, morbidity and increasing mortality. With aging and in presence of bone pathologies, human bone becomes more brittle and prone to damage. A disruptive clinical hypothesis considers Covid-19 virus as an additional contributing factor in bone deterioration. At the macro-scale, the identification of fragility is assured by the clinical practice: common clinical tools, however, are able to predict only 70% of fractures. For this reason, a deep investigation of the bone micro-architecture would be a fundamental hint for the comprehension of damage mechanisms, improving the reliability of fracture risk indicators and performing more accurate diagnosis of bone pathologies. This knowledge level goes beyond the current state of the art and this is where GAP comes into play, providing attractive, multi-disciplinary and versatile training strategies for multi-scale comprehension, detection and patient-specific treatments of bone fractures. The over-arching aim of GAP proposal is to educate young and talented scientists towards a combined high-level experimental and numerical approach for the early-stage accurate, precise detection and mini-invasive treatments of bone fractures, shedding some light on bone micro-scale alterations due to pathologies. The inter-disciplinary findings, that exploit cutting-edge multi-scale imaging facilities and advanced artificial intelligent-based strategies, will be a crucial aspect in the training of skilled researchers and will enable Europe to overcome the silent paralysis of its healthcare system.   Specific project for Doctoral Candidate 5 (DC5): “From the synchrotron images to multi-scale numerical models ”
The primary goal of this research involves analyzing morphological and structural features at the meso-scale to understand their contribution to bone fractures. This entails categorization and comprehension of elements such as trabecular orientation, thickness, and porosity in relation to fractures. Following that, an in-depth exploration of multi-scale mechanisms of bone damage is underway using advanced numerical models. This involves simulating and understanding damage progression from micro-level microcracks to meso-level fractures. The third objective centers on the development of reliable numerical models at both the meso and micro scales, accurately representing how bones accumulate and propagate damage under varied conditions. Lastly, validation of these numerical models is planned through comparison with experimental results, ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in mimicking real-world bone behavior. This validation will guide future studies in bone fracture analysis and treatment.
  Expected results
We expect a comprehensive classification of morphological and structural features that significantly contribute to fractures at the meso-scale. This classification will likely reveal specific patterns and correlations between bone features and fracture tendencies, providing valuable insights for future research and clinical applications.The development of numerical models with optimal mesh progressive refinement is expected to yield precise simulations of bone damage mechanisms at varying scales. These models will likely provide a detailed depiction of how damage propagates within bone structures, aiding in the prediction and understanding of fracture patterns and the conditions under which fractures occur. The calculation of fracture mechanics parameters using the numerical models should offer quantitative metrics that capture the bone mechanical response to stress. These parameters are vital for predicting fracture initiation and progression, enabling a more accurate assessment of bone strength and vulnerability to fractures. The comparison of numerical parameters with experimental multi-scale results will validate the numerical models. The alignment of these results would affirm the accuracy and reliability of the numerical simulations in mimicking real-world fracture behavior. Any disparities identified through this comparison will guide refinements and enhancements to the numerical models, ensuring their effectiveness in simulating bone fractures. Overall, these expected results hold promise for significantly advancing our understanding of bone fractures and providing a foundation for improved diagnostics, treatments, and preventive measures in orthopedics and related fields.
  Planned secondment(s):      1) Prof. D. Taylor, TCD (Trinity College Dublin): development of different numerical models and comparison with the corresponding modelling approaches; obtainment of optimal models for predicting damage evolution. 2) Prof. G. Banfi, IOG (IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio): study and classification of the different structural and morphological fracture that lead fracture in bones.

We welcome applications from Doctoral Researcher candidates fulfilling the following criteria:
  1. Can be of any nationality but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organization for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention (1951 Refugee Convention and the1967 Protocol), compulsory national service, and/or short stays such as holidays are not considered.
  2. Must meet the entry requirements for PhD enrollment. ICFO is offering a postdoctoral position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment.

The successful candidate will be joining the Quantum NanoElectronics and NanoMechanics group led by Prof. Dr. Adrian Bachtold, and will be part of the new joint laboratory with Prof. Dr. Frank Koppens (ICFO) and Prof. Dr. Jarillo-Herrero (MIT).

This project is part of the science and technology based on quantum materials, from advanced superconducting materials, to van der Waals materials, moiré quantum matter, collective phenomena, strong light-matter interactions and more. In particular, the project involves nano-electronic and nano-optical studies of quantum and moiré materials and devices. Many advanced tools will be available such as (diluation) cryostats with radio-frequency access, cryogenic scanning near-field microscope, etc.

This project will focus on QED with correlated electrons. We will use photon modes with large quantum fluctuations to amplify the electron-photon coupling to a level where correlated electron states in two-dimensional devices can be modified. We will study twisted bilayer graphene coupled to THz split-ring resonators in dilution fridges.

Salaries for ICFO Postdoctoral positions are assigned by the Selection Committee, based on experience and seniority of the applicant, as well as the assigned tasks and responsibilities within the group. Standard salaries range from a lower level aligned with national Ramon-y-Cajal fellowships to higher levels aligned with Marie Skłodowska-Curie individual fellowships. The contract is offered for a period of 3 years. The department of Optical and Biophysical SystemsDivision of Optics has recently established new research groups that focus on combined research in Biophotonics, Biophysics or Functional Biointerfaces. It serves as international multidisciplinary research platform proving to researchers motivating and friendly working environment. It provides access to newly established modern state-of-the-art research facilities in order to carry out cutting-edge research directions in science and technology development. New co-workers are granted with creative freedom to explore new solutions and innovations addressing currently emerged grand challenges faced by the modern society.

The Czech-Austrian bilateral project ‘Soft micromachines for mechanic stimulation and biosensing in cell-on-chip applications – SOMICELL’ starts in the group of Biophotonics and it concerns novel toolbox of miniature microdevices for actuating, positioning, and biosensing serving in cell-on-chip studies. It is based on the implementation of responsive hydrogel materials and metallic nanostructures enabling actuating with light and aims at their exploitation in mechanical stimulating and cell signaling study by using a tendon-on-chip system.

Mechanical and molecular signalling plays a crucial role in intercellular communication and it is pivotal in many physiological processes such as wound healing or connective tissue maturation. Yet, understanding these biological processes driven by mechanic forces and chemical cues is currently hindered by the ability to mimic and monitor the local environment experienced by individual cells and their ensembles. We propose a novel approach to mechanical stimulus based on light-controlled free-standing microactuators performing defined cyclic motion, which is directly transmitted to attached cellular structures. Next, we integrate plasmonic microbiosensors with the microactuators, which allow for spatiotemporally resolved in situ monitoring of molecular signalling and stress biomarker species. The developed toolbox will be employed for the investigating of the impact of dysfunctional inflammatory mechano-signalling in tendon and ligament models. Developed novel analytical platform holds potential to outperform current cell-on-chip technologies by precise control over applied stresses/strains, spatiotemporal resolution of cell monitoring, and high throughput.

Depending on candidate’s background and research interest, the candidate will focus on the development of the experimental optical setup or signal processing and will be involved in the investigation of biomolecular processes in continuous manner with the use of plasmonic nanomaterials and plasmon-enhanced optical spectroscopy.

The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions. Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of 2 years.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the following project: Material and social status during and after migration: a hindrance to gains in wellbeing and welfare?

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

Project topic: Status thinking and happiness after migration

The project will follow changes in material and social status and how they affect happiness after migration. It will investigate the role of background culture for this effect.

Migrants often flee from unbearable circumstances. Moving to rich countries like Norway brings substantial material and personal gains for them. These gains should likewise increase happiness and subjective wellbeing, but they do this only to a limited extent - not all the material gains translate to being happier after migration. This is puzzling, and more importantly tragic. It is also likely to hinder integration into the new home society.

The project will investigate the role of status thinking in this puzzle.

Status thinking is a personal preferences about one's own position in societal rankings. People show such preferences to different degrees, and strong status thinking tends to have negative outcomes like reduced happiness.

Status thinking appears universal in developed countries, and it may be responsible for stagnating levels of happiness. But recent investigations suggest that some distinct groups, in for example Ethiopia, do not show status thinking. Preserving this trait should increase the happiness of migrants and help them integrate after migration.

The project will explore the link between status thinking and happiness after migration, and how migrants' happiness can be protected from erosion by status thinking.

Project proposal

You must submit a description of a research project within the subject area and plan for its completion. The project proposal must show how you will proceed to carry out the research work, what the key issues and hypotheses will be, what theories and methods you will apply, publication channels and a schedule for carrying out the work. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will add your competence. The project proposal will be included in the competence assessment.

The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

Qualification requirements

You must have a ph.d. with a specialisation relevant for the project. The ph.d. thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

You must have good command of both oral and written English.

In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:

TU Delft (Resources & Recycling group) and C2CA Technology B.V. are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our dynamic research team. The project is supported by the industrial doctoral training network entitled "Data Enabling Transformation and Optimisation towards Concrete Sustainability” (DETOCS), funded by the Marie Skolodowska-Curie Action of the European Commission in collaboration with an additional support from TU Delft.

Scientific Project

The primary objective of this project is to develop digital and AI-driven process technology for optimising the control and operations of the production of high-quality secondary cementitious materials. Specifically, the project has three components: 1) evaluating input material quality based on artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor data; 2) identifying physical correlations in key processes/units by literature review, numerical modelling and experiments, and 3) integrating AI evaluation and physical correlations into an overall process model for digital control and optimisation of the production process, which will be tested and validated in the industrial plant of C2CA Technology.

The generated results will offer valuable insights into the automatic evaluation of input materials from diverse sources (e.g., diverse construction and demolition waste) and the optimal production of secondary concrete materials, including SCMs, helping the transition towards sustainable concrete.

The doctoral candidate’s responsibilities are as follows:

·  Conduct a literature review related to methods for producing cementitious binders from secondary raw materials, including input quality evaluation, process physics, process modelling and optimisation, and relevant use of digital and AI technologies.

· Develop a model for evaluating the input material quality based on computer vision and sensor data.

· Identify physical correlations of key variables to be incorporated into the process model, by literature review, numerical modelling, and lab-/pilot-scale experiments.

· Develop an overall process model that can predict the output quality of processed materials, helping optimise process steps – which will be tested and validated through field experiments.

· Test & verify the process model at a first-of-a-kind commercial facility, built by C2CA Technology in the Netherlands

·  Communicate research findings through publications, presentations at academic conferences, and progress reports to stakeholders, including academic and industry partners.

· Collaborate with industry partners, sharing findings and integrating their expertise into the project. Furthermore, contribute to the overall DETOCS goals, working collaboratively with other researchers and consortium members and pursuing opportunities for professional development.

C2CA Technology B.V. is seeking a highly motivated graduate student to enrol in an Industrial Doctorate hosted in collaboration with the Department of Building Materials at RWTH, Germany. The project is part of the industrial doctoral training network entitled "Data Enabling Transformation and Optimisation towards Concrete Sustainability” (DETOCS), funded by the Marie Skolodowska-Curie Action of the European Commission. Scientific Project The project focuses on developing a novel, quicker-yet-still-reliable, and more general approach to assessing mechanical and durability performance of concrete mix designs using thermodynamic modelling and simplified first principle models for deterioration mechanisms. The latter will be based on theoretical physical mechanisms of concrete deterioration. The project comprises of DC6 in two stages: numerical modelling and experimental validation on concrete mixes. The key innovation in DC6 lays in development and validation of a streamlined form of physical modelling that is applicable to many concrete types and indicates performance reliably. The specific objectives include: 1) development of a streamlined physical models to predict key early (strength development) and late age performance (resistance to concrete deterioration) of concrete, for concrete produced with very low carbon cement (e.g., using Recycled Cement Fines as SCMs); 2) integration of the numerical model with environmental life cycle assessment and data obtained from industrial plants; 3) application of the method to predict optimal concrete mixes based on locally available materials, and 4) validation of the model predictions using data from laboratory experiments and industrial plants. The project consists of one employment period at C2CA Technology B.V., Netherlands. The first period of 18 months at C2CA in Netherlands, followed by a secondment of 18 months at RWTH in Germany. During the first period, three technical visits will take place, i.e., to Mannok (Ireland), Cementos Argos (Colombia), and EPFL (Switzerland).

We are seeking a highly motived candidate who is passionate about understanding cement production and chemistry, techniques to evaluate cement quality, utilisation of SCMs in cement, grinding technologies, and numerical modelling. The project will involve material characterisation (chemistry, physics, thermal analysis, microscopy), cement hydration, Supplementary Cementitious Materials, numerical modelling (chemical reactions and kinetic modelling), collection of process data to simulate the effect of grinding on SCMs reactivity in composite cement, machine-learning approaches for soft-sensing from time-series of process data, the use of data mining, multivariate statistics, pattern recognition, detailed modelling, and hybrid models (both data-based and model-based). Previous experience on some of the above will be highly appreciated. Engineers with a Master’s in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, as well as individuals with a quantitative science background in physics or chemistry with a main interest in the future of cement production are encouraged to apply.

Activités de recherche 

Chaque proposition doit décrire les nouvelles recherches qui seraient lancées ou les activités de recherche existantes qui seraient élargies grâce à la subvention. Les exemples pourraient inclure des essais randomisés de nouveaux programmes d'études, des études participatives avec des co-chercheurs d'apprenants et de familles ; recherche basée sur la conception axée sur la pratique en classe des enseignants ; plaidoyer ou mise en œuvre de politiques ; cartographie des besoins avec les partenaires communautaires ; ou un travail descriptif approfondi axé sur une gamme de résultats d’apprentissage. Nous encourageons un large éventail de méthodes et d’approches de recherche.

Infrastructure de recherche

Les fonds peuvent être utilisés pour construire et maintenir les infrastructures nécessaires aux activités de recherche du partenariat. Ces besoins en matière d’infrastructure peuvent s’appliquer à l’ensemble des approches méthodologiques. Les exemples peuvent inclure le développement d'enquêtes, d'outils d'évaluation et d'autres instruments ; le développement de protocoles co-conçus ; et la maintenance des archives de données et des systèmes de mise en correspondance. De plus, les activités administratives concernant les données peuvent être soutenues par cette subvention. Celles-ci peuvent inclure l'élaboration de protocoles d'IRB et d'examen, la création de définitions de données standard, la conception conjointe de formulaires de consentement et l'élaboration de protocoles de sécurité et de confidentialité des données.

Sensibilisation, communications et établissement de relations

Les activités qui renforcent les relations de travail entre les partenaires et les autres parties prenantes constituent également une composante possible des projets. Les partenariats recherche-pratique réussis consacrent beaucoup de temps et d’attention à l’établissement et au maintien de la confiance entre les groupes de parties prenantes et au sein de leur partenariat. Les activités potentielles peuvent inclure la convocation de chercheurs, d'éducateurs, d'apprenants, de familles et d'autres participants pour co-concevoir un programme de recherche ; embaucher un spécialiste de la communication et/ou élaborer une stratégie pour communiquer les résultats de la recherche à des parties prenantes importantes ; soutenir le personnel des organisations partenaires dans la gestion des relations de partenariat ; et préparer des rapports de recherche et d'autres publications pour présenter le travail du partenariat au public.

Développement des capacités 

De nombreux partenariats recherche-pratique cherchent à aider le partenaire de pratique à développer sa capacité à utiliser les preuves et les données de recherche dans sa prise de décision quotidienne. Les fonds pourraient être utilisés pour apprendre à mieux impliquer d’autres personnes dans la recherche, mener de meilleures pratiques ou des recherches axées sur les politiques, ou pour être mieux équipés pour communiquer les résultats de recherches complexes aux praticiens, aux familles, aux communautés ou aux décideurs politiques qui ne sont pas des partenaires principaux.

Nous voyons également l’importance de former la prochaine génération d’universitaires et de praticiens prêts à collaborer dans le cadre de partenariats pour améliorer la pratique, les politiques et la recherche. Nous encourageons les propositions qui incluent des fonds dédiés au développement des compétences et de l’expertise dans la conduite de recherches en partenariat pour les étudiants diplômés et les professionnels et chercheurs en début de carrière. Même si nous nous attendons à ce que la plupart des propositions incluent des fonds pour soutenir les étudiants diplômés dans le cadre du partenariat, les propositions pourraient inclure des plans de formation et d'éducation au-delà de cela. Les exemples pourraient inclure le développement d'un cours de méthodes de recherche axé sur les partenariats de recherche, la production de modules de formation en ligne, le développement d'ateliers pour accroître la capacité des chercheurs et d'autres partenaires à s'engager dans l'érudition publique,

Admissibilité et restrictions

Admissibilité

Les propositions au programme de partenariat recherche-pratique doivent concerner des recherches et d'autres activités visant à soutenir des partenariats de collaboration entre des chercheurs universitaires et un large éventail de praticiens de l'éducation.

Les chercheurs principaux (CP) et les co-chercheurs postulant pour une subvention de partenariat recherche-pratique doivent avoir un doctorat obtenu dans une discipline universitaire ou un domaine professionnel, ou une expérience professionnelle démontrée appropriée pour ce programme. Remarque : Si le chercheur principal ou le co-chercheur principal du côté pratique/politique du partenariat n'a pas de doctorat obtenu, il est censé avoir une expérience professionnelle appropriée pour assumer ce rôle au sein du partenariat. Bien que des étudiants diplômés puissent faire partie de l'équipe, ils ne peuvent pas être nommés chercheur principal ou co-chercheur principal sur la proposition.

Le chercheur principal doit être affilié à une organisation à but non lucratif ou à une institution publique/gouvernementale disposée à servir d'organisation administratrice si la subvention est accordée. La Fondation Spencer n'accorde pas de subventions directement aux particuliers. Les exemples incluent les collèges publics ou à but non lucratif, les universités, les districts scolaires et les centres de recherche, ainsi que d'autres organisations à but non lucratif avec une détermination 501(c)(3) de l'IRS (ou un statut à but non lucratif équivalent si l'organisation est en dehors des États-Unis).

Le chercheur principal associé à l'organisation administrant cette subvention pourrait être soit le praticien/décideur politique, soit le chercheur du partenariat. Au moins un Co-PI doit provenir de la ou des autres organisations membres.

Les propositions sont acceptées en provenance des États-Unis et du monde entier. Toutes les propositions doivent être soumises en anglais et les budgets doivent être proposés en dollars américains.

Restrictions

Le budget total du partenariat recherche-pratique est limité à 400 000 $, y compris jusqu'à 15 % de frais indirects .

La durée proposée de la subvention ne peut pas dépasser 3 ans.

Les chercheurs principaux et co-chercheurs ne peuvent détenir qu'une seule subvention de recherche active de la Fondation Spencer à la fois. (Cette restriction ne s'applique pas à l'organisation administrante ; les organisations peuvent soumettre autant de propositions qu'elles le souhaitent à condition qu'elles concernent des projets différents avec des équipes de projet différentes.)

Les chercheurs chercheurs et co-chercheurs ne peuvent pas soumettre plus d'une proposition de recherche à la Fondation Spencer à la fois. Cette restriction s'applique au programme de petites subventions, au programme de grandes subventions, au programme de subventions de recherche sur l'équité raciale et à ce programme de subventions de partenariat recherche-pratique. Si le chercheur principal ou l'un des co-chercheurs ont actuellement une proposition de recherche à l'étude dans l'un de ces programmes, ils doivent attendre qu'une décision finale ait été prise sur la proposition en attente avant de pouvoir soumettre une nouvelle proposition.

Étape 1 - Inscription

Activités proposées

The Research-Practice Partnership (RPP) Grants Program is intended to support education research projects that engage in collaborative and participatory partnerships with project budgets up to $400,000 and durations of up to three years. We accept Intent to Apply forms once a year in this program.

We view partnerships as an important approach to knowledge generation and the improvement of education, broadly construed. Program Statement

The Research-Practice Partnership (RPP) Grants Program is intended to support education research projects that engage in collaborative and participatory partnerships with project budgets of up to $400,000 and durations of up to three years. We accept Intent to Apply forms once a year in this program.

We view partnerships as an important approach to knowledge generation and the improvement of education, broadly construed. Rigorous partnership work is intentionally organized to engage diverse forms of expertise and perspectives, across practitioners, scholars, and organizations, as well as disciplines and methods, in knowledge generation around pressing problems of practice and/or policy. Further, RPPs can facilitate the long-term accumulation of knowledge in new ways as researchers and practitioners work together to ask practitioner- and policy-relevant questions on key topics in specific settings over time. Many key problems of practice and policy are historically saturated and require multiple perspectives and long-term engagement if sustainable and systemic change is to occur. Over the long term, we anticipate that research conducted by RPPs will result in new insights into the processes, practices, routines, and policies that improve education for learners, educators, families, communities, and institutions where learning and teaching happen (e.g., schools, universities, community centers, parks, museums, other workplaces).

This grant program is open to existing partnerships between researchers and a broad array of practitioners. For example, practitioners might work in school districts, county offices of education, state educational organizations, universities, community-based organizations, and other social sectors that significantly impact learners’ lives. As such, we define practitioners broadly; they might be policy-makers, out-of-school-time providers and other informal educators, K-12 teachers and leaders, or families and other community members. We are open to applications from design-based research teams, networked improvement communities, place-based research alliances, and a wealth of other partnership arrangements.

We expect the partners in the RPPs we fund to have engaged in fruitful long-term collaborations. How this history is evidenced can vary. For example, teams might have a track record of success as demonstrated by in-process or completed research studies, solutions-in-progress, established trusting relationships, or data-sharing agreements, amongst other possibilities. This grant program is specifically intended to build the capacity of partnerships to make educational change. Effective governance is a key aspect of successful partnerships, and as such, all proposals should specify their governance structures and how the work is jointly developed, as well as how power is shared, across all partners. As noted, while this grant program is open to all partnership configurations across a range of learning contexts, in addition to PreK-12 school systems, we especially encourage applications from partnerships that include scholars and institutions of higher education, rural geographic locations, and in locations outside of the United States, as well as partnerships that deeply engage community-based organizations and families.

Educational Equity

Importantly, we expect that partnerships will foreground issues connected to inequality in education and articulate how their project aims to disrupt the reproduction and deepening of inequities. We welcome projects that seek to disrupt inequities across a range of dimensions including (but not exclusive to) race, ethnicity, language, class, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, geography, political affiliations, religion, and (dis)ability.

Activities that May be Funded

Research is fundamental to every research-practice partnership, and we expect research activities to be the central element of every proposal. In addition to detailing a plan for research, applicants should also prioritize plans for communicating and disseminating key findings and other important partnership activities that have the potential to foster positive educational changes.

The following categories of activities are meant to be illustrative, but not exclusive, of activities in addition to the research that could be funded under this program. We expect proposed activities will be highly related to partnership type and context but will also, at their core, have the potential to make a contribution to improved educational practice and/or policy beyond the specific context in which scholars and practitioners are working.

Research Activities 

Each proposal should describe new research that would be launched or existing research activities that would be expanded with the grant. Examples might include randomized trials of new curricula, participatory studies with learner and family coresearchers; design-based research focused on teacher classroom practice; policy advocacy or implementation; needs mapping with community partners; or deep descriptive work focused on a range of learner outcomes. We encourage a wide range of research methods and approaches.

Research Infrastructure

Funds may be used for building and sustaining infrastructure needs for the research activities of the partnership. These infrastructure needs may apply to the full range of methodological approaches. Examples may include the development of surveys, assessment tools, and other instruments; the development of co-designed protocols; and the upkeep of data archives and matching systems. Additionally, administrative activities concerning data may be supported by this grant. These may include developing IRB and review protocols, creating standard data definitions, co-designing consent forms, and developing data security and privacy protocols.

Outreach, Communications, and Relationship Building

Activities that strengthen the working relationship between partners and other stakeholders are also a possible component of the projects. Successful research-practice partnerships devote a great deal of time and attention to building and maintaining trust across stakeholder groups and within their partnership. Potential activities may include convening researchers, educators, learners, families, and other participants to co-design a research agenda; hiring a communication specialist and/or developing a strategy for communicating research findings to important constituents; supporting staff in the partner organizations to manage partnership relations; and preparing research reports and other publications to present the work of the partnership to the public.

Capacity Development 

Many research-practice partnerships seek to assist the practice partner in developing capacity to use research evidence and data in their daily decision-making. Funds could be used to learn how to better engage others in research, conduct better practice or policy-driven research, or to be better equipped to communicate complex research findings to practitioners, families, communities, or policy makers that were not primary partners.

We also see the importance of developing the next generation of scholars and practitioners who are prepared to collaborate in partnerships to improve practice, policy, and research. We encourage proposals that include funds dedicated to the development of skills and expertise in conducting research in partnership for graduate students and early-career professionals and researchers. While we expect that most proposals will include funds to support graduate students as part of the partnership, proposals could include plans for training and education beyond that. Examples might include the development of a research methods course focused on research partnerships, the production of online training modules, the development of workshops to increase the capacity of researchers and other partners to engage in public scholarship, or the integration of research-practice partnerships in teacher or principal preparation courses.

Eligibility and Restrictions

Eligibility

Proposals to the Research-Practice Partnership program must be for research and other activities aimed to support collaborative partnerships between academic researcher(s) and a broad array of practitioner(s) of education.

Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs applying for a Research-Practice Partnership Grant are expected to have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or demonstrated professional experience appropriate for this program. Note: If the PI or Co-PI from the practice/policy side of the partnership does not have an earned doctorate, they are expected to have appropriate professional experience to serve in this role in the partnership. While graduate students may be part of the team, they may not be named the PI or Co-PI on the proposal.

The PI must be affiliated with a non-profit organization or public/governmental institution that is willing to serve as the administering organization if the grant is awarded. The Spencer Foundation does not award grants directly to individuals. Examples include non-profit or public colleges, universities, school districts, and research facilities, as well as other non-profit organizations with a 501(c)(3) determination from the IRS (or equivalent non-profit status if the organization is outside of the United States).

The PI associated with the administering organization for this grant could be either the practitioner/policymaker or researcher of the partnership. At least one Co-PI should be from the other member organization(s).

Proposals are accepted from the U.S. and internationally. All proposals must be submitted in English and budgets must be proposed in U.S. Dollars.

Restrictions

Research-Practice Partnership budget totals are limited to $400,000 including up to 15% indirect cost charges.

The proposed duration of the grant may not be longer than 3 years.

PIs and Co-PIs may only hold one active research grant from the Spencer Foundation at a time. (This restriction does not apply to the administering organization; organizations may submit as many proposals as they like as long as they are for different projects with different project teams.)

PIs and Co-PIs may not submit more than one research proposal to the Spencer Foundation at a time. This restriction applies to the Small Grants Program, Large Grants Program, Racial Equity Research Grants Program, and this Research-Practice Partnership Grants Program. If the PI or any of the Co-PIs currently have a research proposal under consideration in any of these programs, they are required to wait until a final decision has been made on the pending proposal before they can submit a new proposal.

How to Apply

The application process begins with an Intent to Apply form.  Once submitted, you will automatically have access to the Full Proposal application in our online portal. Intent to Apply forms are due by 12:00pm Noon central time on the deadline date.

Intent to Apply Guidelines

The Intent to Apply form must be submitted through an online application form following the guidelines below before you are given access to the full proposal application.

Step 1 - Registration

Note: This application is configured for the Principal Investigator (PI) on the project to register and submit the form. If someone other than the PI will be completing the online application (e.g., an administrative assistant), the PI should register as described in Step 1 below, then provide the username and password to the person assisting them with the application.

If you (the PI) have never accessed the Spencer Foundation online portal, you must register and create a profile by going to https://spencer.smartsimple.us and clicking the “Register Here” button.  Follow the guidelines on the registration page to create your profile.

If you already have an account, log on to update your profile and access the Intent to Apply form.

Step 2 - My Profile

After logging in, follow the directions to complete the information requested on the My Profile page and upload your current CV (10 page limit). The My Profile page is your online account with the Spencer Foundation whether you are applying for a grant, reviewing a proposal, or submitting a grantee report.

Step 3 – Intent to Apply Form

To fill out the Intent to Apply form, go to your Workbench and click the Apply button for the Research-Practice Partnerships.

Your draft form can be saved and returned to at any time prior to the Intent to Apply form deadline so that you may continue work on it. Your draft form will be available on your Draft Proposals list on your Workbench.

Intent to Apply Form Elements

Within the online form, there are detailed guidelines for each section. Below is an overview of the application elements you will be expected to complete.

Project Personnel - As the person creating the draft application, you will automatically be assigned to the proposal as the Principal Investigator. If there are Co-PIs on the proposal, you are asked to provide their names and organizations in this section.

Proposal Summary – Information about the proposal is requested, such as the project title, estimated duration, the central research question(s), and a 200-word project summary.

Project Data – Within the online application, we ask you to check off the appropriate options with regard to your research activities in the partnership in the following categories: disciplinary perspective, methodologies, topics, geographical scope, contexts, and participants. This information is helpful in determining the appropriate reviewers for your eventual full proposal and for internal evaluations of our grant programs.

Submit

Once you have completed the form, click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. You will now have access to the Full Proposal application form on your Workbench.

Reminder: You must complete an Intent to Apply form by noon central time on the deadline if you intend to submit a Full Proposal for the upcoming review cycle.

Full Proposal Guidelines

Once your Intent to Apply form has been submitted, you will automatically have access to the Full Proposal application on your Workbench. Within the online application, there are detailed guidelines for each section. Below is an overview of the elements you will be expected to complete.

Administering and Partner Organizations: In this section you will confirm the Administering Organization for the proposal and enter the name(s) of the partnering organization(s).

Project Personnel: It is necessary for you to connect the profiles of the Co-PI(s) to the full proposal. Instruct your Co-PI(s) to create an account and update their profile following Steps 1 and 2 above.  Once they have done so, follow the guidelines in this section for connecting them to the proposal.

In this section you are also asked to confirm that neither the PI nor the Co-PIs currently have another research proposal under review at Spencer (see Restrictions).

Proposal Summary: Information about the project is requested, such as the project title, start and end dates, the central research question(s) and a 200-word summary.

Budget and Budget Justification: The budget form is divided into the following categories and each category has a pulldown menu of the line-item choices listed in parentheses below:

Each expense for your project should be added and the budget narrative field should be completed, providing a description of that specific expense.

Detailed guidelines are available within the application form.

Subcontracts: If your project will have subcontracts, a separate subcontract budget form will need to be completed for each. The subcontract form has the same categories and line item choices listed above.

Indirect Cost Charges (IDC): Budgets in this program may include 15% IDC (also known as overhead). Subcontract budgets may also include the 15% IDC, but should not be included in the main budget total when calculating the overall IDC for the project.

Proposal Narrative: We are looking for applications that make a persuasive argument for the value of your partnership and for why the proposed activities will strengthen the partnership and contribute to educational change. You are expected to upload a proposal narrative pdf that includes the following:

History, Background, and Context of Partnership

Describe the nature of your partnership, including but not limited to: who the key organizational players in the partnership are, the history of the partnership, its theory of change, central goals and achievements to date, how the partnership is governed, how educational equity is central to the partnership, and how you envision the partnership progressing over the next five to ten years or longer. We also expect the proposal to make a compelling argument for why your partnership is useful and how it adds value to (and also beyond) existing research in the field.

Proposed Activities

Research activities – Describe the activities you will undertake with support from the Foundation. A clear articulation of your research activities should be a central component of your proposal narrative. You may describe how funds will be used to strengthen ongoing research activities or enable you to launch new activities. Situate these research activities in one or more particular topic area(s) and explain how proposed activities will lead to knowledge generation that ultimately advances understanding of the issue(s) and leads to improved policy and/or practice. To make this argument, you may consider briefly describing existing research and gaps in that work, but we do not expect a full literature review.

Additional activities – In addition to research activities, you should describe how funds will support activities that fall under at least one of the three other categories: (1) research infrastructure; (2) outreach, communications, and relationship-building; or (3) capacity-building. We recognize that there may be activities that will advance your work that fall outside these categories. We will consider proposals that seek funds for other kinds of activities with a compelling rationale for their importance to your work.

When describing the research and other activities you seek support for, it is important to clearly specify what these activities are and explain why support for them is critical to advancing the work of the partnership and realizing its long-term potential. Also, describe how educational equity is central to the partnership’s activities.

The proposal narrative may not exceed 4500 words and at its conclusion, should include the word count in parentheses. Your reference list should follow your narrative in the same pdf file and will not count toward the 4500 word limit. The text should be double–spaced and in 12-point font, and your pdf should have page numbers. APA style is preferred.

Note: Tables and other figures can be included in the text of your proposal, where appropriate, provided they are used sparingly. The text contained in any tables and figures will not count toward the word limit. However, it is important that you describe or explain any tables or figures in the narrative portion of your proposal, which will contribute to your word count. Do not assume that tables and other figures are self-explanatory.

Partner Letter: A letter from the partner organization(s) to the administering organization submitting this application should be uploaded. This letter should describe the value of the partnership from the partner's perspective. If there are multiple partners, teams are able to upload multiple letters.

Project Timeline: The project timeline should indicate the proposed start and end dates of the partnership activities as well as key events and milestones. The major activities listed in the project timeline should be reflected in the proposal narrative. The project timeline may not exceed 1 page and the text should be in 12-point font. The proposed project duration can be up to 3 years.

Project Team: A document should be uploaded that identifies the roles, responsibilities and knowledge base of the key personnel involved in the partnership. The Principal Investigator should be associated with the administering organization for this grant, which could be either the practitioner or researcher of the partnership. Optional Appendix C: Innovative Approaches to Equity in Research:  We recognize that scholars and scholarship have continued to develop innovative approaches to conducting research in ethical and just ways. Scholars have raised that proposals attending to these issues in sophisticated ways often face choices in providing detail in their proposals. Thus, if you so choose, you are invited to upload a one-page appendix in your grant proposal to elaborate on the theoretical, methodological, and partnership structures, or other dimensions you deem as relevant to conducting ethical and just research. For example, if your work engages youth, families, or community-based organizations, you may want to elaborate on how traditional power dynamics will be addressed. Or, if your work engages with Indigenous communities, you may want to elaborate on the project leadership’s histories and engagement with Indigenous communities, any formal agreements (e.g. Tribal IRB or approvals), or the use of Indigenous methodologies in the project. Or, perhaps you are working on new quantitative measures or modeling approaches that would benefit from further explanation. We anticipate and welcome a wide range of other possibilities.

A note about IRB Approval: Proof of Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval is not required at the time of proposal submission. In the event that IRB approval is needed for this project and it is chosen for funding, the Administering Organization will be responsible for obtaining IRB review and approval in accordance with its institutional policies and applicable law.

Resubmission: If this is a resubmission of a proposal previously submitted to the Spencer Foundation, you are asked to indicate this within the application and upload a 1-page explanation of how the proposal was revised.

  • conducting research – in field of composition search and machine learning for lightweight, strong alloys by using ab-Initio approaches;
  • reporting results on a regular basis;
  • cooperating with all members of the CoE;
  • preparation of scientific publications;

Definition of research activities and tasks to be accomplished:

1.            The tools consist of a triple survey of each population category mentioned above.

2.            The survey of tourists (N=200) will seek to characterize the degree of knowledge that tourists have of the health issues of the territories they visit.  The survey will also assess their readiness to change (what would they be willing to change in behaviour? according to what motivations, at what costs, etc.). Two modes of handover are envisaged (for a panel of 120 people minimum): one live during a field trip and the other via travelers' forums and private Facebook groups according to a methodology successfully tested as part of the doctoral program "Working in the countries of the sun"

3.            The survey of workers in the tourism sector (N=100) will seek to characterize local health problems from a sample of workers integrating different types of jobs in the tourism sector (hotels, restaurants, leisure activities and excursions). A control group of workers from other economic sectors will be formed (farmers, workers, administrative employees, etc.). The handover will also be mixed: live on site and via professional discussion groups and forums according to a methodology that is also already proven.

4.            The survey of decision-makers and management actors (owners, managers) will seek to estimate possible changes according to scenarios developed from the results of the first two surveys. This work will be based on about thirty interviews in direct handover vis-à-vis or video-communication (N = 30).

The newly founded research group “Signaling Dynamics of Cellular Biomedical Systems”, headed by Junior Professor Chengzhe Tian, utilizes cutting-edge quantitative approaches to dissect the molecular origin of cell-to-cell heterogeneity and its implications for human diseases. We previously developed innovative time-lapse microscopy and automated image-analysis techniques, enabling direct monitoring of single cells in their native states over several weeks. We want to apply them to study how drug-naïve cancer cells acquire resistance to targeted therapies and would like to invite a Postdoctoral Researcher to join us.

Our lab is located at the Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology and is associated with the Stuttgart Research Center Systems Biology. We have full access to the state-of-the-art experimental and computational equipment on campus.

The candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in any field of experimental biology. A strong candidate would have rich skills in mammalian cell biology techniques, with a focus on signaling and CRISPR-based genome editing, and a strong desire to learn microscopy and computational data analysis. The candidate should be highly motivated, curiosity-driven, and willing to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment.

The position is available immediately. The contract runs initially for three years, with the possibility of an extension. Remuneration will be based on the collective agreement for the public service of German federal states (TV-L E13, 100%).
