Thanks to the generosity of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) in Paris and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Columbia Global Centers | Amman co-created a six-month virtual fellowship to support researchers working in the social sciences on issues related to exiting violence.
Although there is a substantial amount of research on the issue of violence as well as its causes and modalities, very little research has been done on the issue of “exiting” violence. Thus, this virtual scholarship program aims to engage scholars, including young scholars, from the MENA region, and provide them with opportunities to study how to exit violence by analyzing the processes involved in exiting violence into the world. framework of a permanent dialogue with decision-makers and practitioners.
The fellows will be part of the International Panel on Exiting Violence (IPEV), which is a multidisciplinary community of researchers and scholars internationally recognized for their work on contemporary forms of violence.
During the six-month virtual fellowship, fellows are expected to produce and publish articles and opinion pieces on exiting violence in publications in the region, as well as in international online publications (such as The Conversation , The Huffington Post, Slate, etc.), participate in a series of virtual webinars and contribute by offering recommendations in video or podcast form to international, regional and national institutions, policy makers, NGO representatives and practitioners on this issue.
Support mechanisms for fellows include:
- Create collaborations between researchers from the MENA region and their peers in the United States and Europe;
- Improve the visibility of the issues addressed by IPEV in the media and among policy makers at the international level;
- Disseminate research and ideas through media content;
- Capacity building for researchers through access to two virtual training workshops designed by the Columbia Writing Center and Journalism School; and,
- Foster a network of fellows by linking them to other related Columbia initiatives that support social science researchers.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants are academics:
- from the MENA region;
- in social sciences who have researched and published on issues of exiting violence, and identified good practices for exiting contemporary forms of violence and their tragic consequences, including exile and forced migration.

Applicants must submit a dossier including the following documents before September 15, 2021 :
- A curriculum vitae which includes university degrees and professional experience;
- A personal statement (two pages) which includes the motivation for applying for this program, as well as a description of the research related to the transition from violence;
- A proposal describing the research that will be undertaken during the six-month fellowship;
- One to two writing samples / publications;
- Letter of recommendation from an academic colleague who is familiar with the candidate’s previous work; and,
- Copies of transcripts.

Terms and conditions
Fellows will receive a stipend of $ 6,000 for a six-month fellowship and have access to virtual training at Columbia University .
