GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

The “IT” department is responsible for the operation and further development of the extensive infrastructure of GSI and FAIR. For this, IT operates a wide range of services, such as computing and storage systems as well as various data centers on the campus.

The responsibility of the “Linux & Web” group is the support of basic Linux-based IT services, central Linux terminal servers and Linux-based workstations. In addition, the group operates the central web server of GSI (www.gsi.de) as well as various web-based collaboration services.

We are looking for someone to join the IT department (CIT) in the “Linux & Web” group as soon as possible

Your tasks:

• Development, operation and monitoring of Linux-based services

• Conception and implementation of IT operating processes based on the services provided

• Implementation of interfaces for data exchange processes between the individual services

• The special focus is on operation and further development of:

o the central authentication infrastructure based on Kerberos and LDAP

o the Linux Terminal Services and Scientific Workstations including general and research-specific application software (Debian GNU / Linux, KDE etc.)

o the central Mail Transport Agents including spam filtering (Postfix, Spamassassin, etc.)

• Adaptation and expansion of IT-Services based on Open-Source-Software

• Participation for on-call duty

Your profile:

• Completed (Bachelor or Master) in computer science, physics or comparable degree courses

• In-depth Linux know-how, preferably Debian

• Experience in the use of configuration management systems

• In-depth knowledge of at least one of the programming languages: Ruby, Bash, Perl, Python

• Safe handling of version management systems (git)

• Basic understanding and knowledge to operate on open source projects

• Solid foundation of German and English skills, both verbal and written

Your work style is structured and independent. The use of documentation tools during your work is an efficient support to your system.

You have strong communication skills, a confident demeanor, as well as a high level of methodological and social competence and the willingness to independently acquire knowledge for continuous improvement. The ability to work in teams and groups, while providing a solution-oriented environment is required.

The work contract is unlimited. The salary is based on the collective agreement TVöD (Bund) applicable at GSI. After an appropriate training period, you can expect a wide range of activities in an interesting work environment with adequate challenges.
