The Shih-Chun Wang Memorial Fund was established in 1998 in memory of Shih-Chun Wang, the Pfeiffer Professor of Pharmacology at Columbia University and a long-standing APS member. Wang was internationally recognized for his research contributions in the areas of neurophysiology and neuropharmacology with an emphasis on brain stem control mechanisms. The Shih-Chun Wang Young Investigator Award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on their research program in the physiological sciences. Awardee must attend the American Physiology Summit.
The award package includes;
- $10,000 honorarium is designated for use in research program, but does not include any indirect cost reimbursement;
- complimentary early registration to attend the American Physiology Summit;
- certificate presented during the APS Awards Meeting.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be an APS member in good standing for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years at the time of application;
- Applicant must be working within the U.S.;
- Hold an academic rank no higher than assistant professor; and
- U.S. residency is not required.
Criteria
- description of current and pending research program, highlighting outstanding promise based on research in the physiological sciences (up to 3 pages);
- One-page justification of how and why the intent of the award is being met;
- Five-page NIH-style biosketch;
- list of current and pending grant support not in the biosketch;
- copy of abstract(s) submitted for presentation during the APS annual meeting at EB;
- One letter of recommendation from department chair, administrator or mentor; and
- at least one letter of support discussing the impact of the applicant’s research program on the physiological sciences.

The Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award honors a member of the American Physiological Society (APS) who is judged to have made outstanding contributions to physiological research and demonstrated dedication and commitment to excellence in training of young physiologists whether by:
- mentoring, guiding and nurturing their professional and personal development;
- developing novel education methods/materials and promoting scientific outreach efforts;
- attracting individuals to the field of physiology; or
- by otherwise fostering an environment exceptionally conducive to education in physiology.
This Award was established to recognize Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen (1918-2015). Dr. Schmidt-Nielsen was the first female President of APS and a distinguished physiologist who made significant contributions in her field of fluid and electrolyte balance and renal function.
The award will be presented annually. The award recipient receives:
- a $1,000 honorarium;
- up to $1,500 in reimbursement of travel expenses related to the APS annual meeting at the American Physiology Summit;
- American Physiology Summit early registration reimbursement; and
- a commemorative plaque.

Criteria
Nominations for the Bodil M. Schmidt‐Nielsen Award should include the following:
- A letter (maximum 5 pages) stating the basis for nomination with a synopsis of the nominee's scientific contributions, mentoring skills and evidence related to the specific evaluation criteria.
- A list of current and former trainees (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows and junior faculty), training dates, their current positions and any awards they received. Trainees should list awards received while being mentored by the nominee separately.
- Up to seven letters of support
- Nominee's current (up to date) curriculum vitae, listing honors and awards, professional positions, grants (current and past support), publications and teaching activities.
- The number of times the nominee has attended the APS annual meeting in the past three years.

Le prix est décerné à des personnes ou à des institutions qui, grâce à leurs projets ou initiatives de recherche, ont fait des progrès significatifs dans les domaines suivants :
- Améliorer l'accès des personnes à l'éducation de base, aux programmes de formation professionnelle et/ou à l'enseignement supérieur.
- Améliorer l'alphabétisation de tous les membres de la société.
- Diminuer la dépendance de l'éducation des enfants sur le statut socio-économique de leurs parents.
- Approche innovante de l'éducation qui maximise les ressources disponibles (technologie).
Conditions et exigences :
- Les travaux ou projets et initiatives de recherche et développement des candidats nominés doivent être innovants et avoir eu un impact élevé sur le continent africain.
- Le travail soumis doit être d'une importance primordiale pour promouvoir un développement économique, social, humain et infrastructurel significatif dans le domaine annoncé du prix, l'éducation.
- Le travail de recherche soumis d'un candidat nominé doit être composé d'études et de recherches appliquées, publiées dans des revues scientifiques à comité de lecture et reconnues au niveau mondial dans le domaine annoncé. Les résultats de la recherche doivent avoir été appliqués après publication dans les pays africains au cours des dix dernières années. Des justificatifs adéquats doivent être fournis.
- Les candidatures sont acceptées par les institutions régionales et internationales compétentes et les centres scientifiques (universités, instituts et centres de recherche scientifique) ainsi que par les organisations des Nations Unies, les anciens lauréats dans le domaine du prix ou les anciens membres de l'évaluation.

Conditions and requirements:
- The nominated candidates’ research and development work or projects and initiatives must be innovative and have achieved high-impact in the African continent.
- The submitted work must be of paramount importance in promoting significant economic, social, human resources and infrastructure development within the announced field of the prize, education.
- The submitted research work of a nominated candidate should be composed of studies and applied research, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and recognized at a global level within the announced field. The research outcomes need to have been applied after publication in African countries within the past ten years. Adequate supporting evidence needs to be provided.
- Nominations are accepted from competent regional and international institutions and scientific centers (universities, institutes and centers of scientific research) as well as from UN organizations, former winners in the field of the prize, or former evaluation members.
- All submissions must be submitted in English. If the work is carried out is in other languages, a comprehensive summary of the nominated work in English must be submitted.

Guyton and his interests in feedback control and mathematical modeling of physiological systems. The award is intended to support an independent investigator who holds an academic rank no higher than assistant professor and is pursuing research that utilizes quantitative and integrative approaches and feedback control system theory for the study of physiological functions.

Postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Venuprasad Poojary in the Department of Internal Medicine and Immunology at the UT Southwestern Medical Center. Our lab studies cancer immunology and inflammation in mouse models (Singh A et al. Nat. Commun (In press), 2023; Kathania M et al. Cell Reports, 2022; Kumar R et al., Trends in Immunol, 2022; Thiess et al., Cell Reports, 2022; Mukherjee S et al. Nat. Immunol, 2021; Singh AK et al. Nat. Commun, 2021; Kathania M et al., Nat. Immunol, 2016, etc.). Our goal is to identify key regulatory mechanisms in the immune cells that regulate inflammation and to target these pathways. Purpose
To recognize significant accomplishments by individuals in stimulating students, underrepresented in the profession, to elect careers in the chemical sciences and engineering.
Description
The award consists of $5,000 and a certificate. A grant of $10,000 will be made to an academic institution, designated by the recipient, to strengthen its activities in meeting the objectives of the award. Up to $1,500 for travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented will be reimbursed.
Eligibility
Nominees for the award may come from any professional setting: academia, industry, government, or other independent facility. The award is intended to recognize significant accomplishments in the United States by individuals in stimulating students, especially those currently underrepresented in the profession, to elect careers in the chemical sciences and engineering and in generating a broader appreciation of chemistry as the central science. The award will be granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background.

Le prix du jeune chercheur reconnaît l'excellence dans la recherche et stimule la poursuite des travaux au plus haut niveau scientifique.

Le Prix Jeune Chercheur est un prix de 5 000 € à utiliser pour toute forme de développement professionnel (achat de livres, de matériel pédagogique, participation à des congrès ou à des formations, etc.). ESCMID demandera un rapport de dépenses final et fera un suivi avec le bénéficiaire après deux ans.
Qui peut postuler
- Membre de l'ESCMID dont la recherche est basée sur des investigations en laboratoire, des essais / études cliniques, des études sur des animaux ou une combinaison de ceux-ci
- Doctorat avec au moins trois ans d'expérience postdoctorale mais pas plus de huit ans* après l'obtention du diplôme
- MD ou MD/PhD avec au moins trois ans d'expérience postdoctorale ou clinique mais pas plus de cinq ans* à compter de la fin de la formation clinique/spécialiste

Ce prix vise à reconnaître et à soutenir les nouveaux scientifiques et/ou cliniciens émergents des PRITI actifs dans le domaine de la microbiologie clinique et des maladies infectieuses.

L'Emerging Young Investigators Award est un prix de 5 000 € à utiliser pour toute forme de développement professionnel (achat de livres, de matériel pédagogique, participation à des congrès ou à des formations, etc.). ESCMID demandera un rapport de dépenses final et fera un suivi avec le bénéficiaire après deux ans. De plus, l'ESCMID couvrira l'inscription, les frais de déplacement et l'hébergement à l'ECCMID l'année de la remise des prix.
Qui peut postuler
- Les membres de l'ESCMID actifs dans la recherche sont basés sur des investigations en laboratoire, des essais / études cliniques, des études sur des animaux ou une combinaison de ceux-ci

Prix du stagiaire exceptionnel TAE
Le prix TAE Outstanding Trainee Award récompense les stagiaires en médecine polyvalents engagés dans des activités parascolaires, l'enseignement, le réseautage et la collaboration en microbiologie clinique (CM) et/ou en maladies infectieuses (ID).
L'application est ouverte chaque année. Deux lauréats sont généralement sélectionnés, un en CM et un en ID.
Prix
Le prix TAE Outstanding Trainee est de 1 000 €. En outre, il couvre les voyages ECCMID 2024 (jusqu'à 500 €), l'inscription, les voyages ESCMID Summer School 2024 (jusqu'à 500 €), l'inscription et l'hébergement.
Le remboursement des frais d'inscription et de voyage aura lieu après l'événement sur la base d'une preuve de présence et d'une preuve des dépenses payées par le lauréat.

The Excellence Awardee is distinguished by becoming an ESCMID fellow and will share his/her career achievements during the keynote lecture at ECCMID.

- Senior scientists that are professionally active and prepared to give a keynote lecture during ECCMID. It is not required for a nominee to be an ESCMID member.

TAE Outstanding Trainee Award
The TAE Outstanding Trainee Award recognises multi-skilled medical trainees engaged in extracurricular activities, teaching, networking and collaboration in clinical microbiology (CM) and/or infectious diseases (ID).
Application is open annually. Two awardees are usually selected, one in CM and one in ID.
Award
TAE Outstanding Trainee Award is 1,000 €. In addition, it covers ECCMID 2024 travel (up to EUR 500 €), registration, ESCMID Summer School 2024 travel (up to EUR 500 €), registration, and accommodation.
Reimbursement of registration and travel expenses will take place after the event based on proof of attendance and proof of expenses paid by the awardee.
Who can apply
- ESCMID Member and ESCMID Young Scientist Member or LMIC Member fulfilling the criteria of Young Scientist Membership
- The applicant must be registered in an accredited training programme which leads to specialisation in CM, ID or other closely related specialities/subspecialties

About the job
The focus of the job is on experimental steels research, contributing to a research project Material and structural integrity assessment for safe Nordic hydrogen transportation infrastructure. Developing safe hydrogen (H) transport infrastructure is a mutual interest for the Nordic countries. For example, pipelines provide the most feasible option for regional and inter-regional large-scale transport and storage of pressurised H gas. However, phenomenon called H-embrittlement (HE) is a key threat to the safety of H-pipelines, caused by H ingress into steel, making the pipelines prone to brittle fracture. Low winter temperatures common in the region increase embrittlement further. Remaining scientific challenge is to understand the combined influence of low temperature and HE on the mechanical properties and fracture resistance of steels.
The research is expected to focus on fundamental understanding of HE in high-strength steels, and testing and characterisation of hydrogen-steel interactions. More specifically, microstructural characterisation, fracture toughness testing, and identification of the weakest links and failure mechanisms are of especial interest.

Who are you?
For a position as a doctoral researcher, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The successful candidate will carry out their research in the above-described areas of materials research. The position is for persons who have recently finished their master’s degree and are advancing towards a professional research career. The selection criteria are the following:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering). Students near completion can also apply. The degree must be completed prior to the beginning of the employment.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following: hydrogen embrittlement, fracture mechanical testing, mechanical testing, electrochemical testing – preferably with demonstrated experience.
- Familiarity with microstructural deformation and fracture behaviour of steels is a big plus.

Salary
The successful candidate will be employed at the University of Oulu. The Project The development of light, strong, ductile and therefore easily formable hexagonal closed pack (hcp) alloys is one of the keys to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emission in aeronautic and transportation industries. Currently, their use as structural material is limited because of their lack of easy slip systems and a plasticity largely adapted by deformation twinning, associated with high residual stresses. The research project aim at investigating the nucleation and propagation mechanisms of deformation twinning in hcp alloys and the role of solute atoms in these processes. This will be done through the development of novel in situ testing experiments (high strain rate, cryo- to high temperatures) combined with advanced characterization techniques for strains, stresses and dislocation analyses at the nanoscale. This includes the development of in situ high-resolution transmission kikuchi diffraction technique (HR-TKD) in SEM, as well as the precession electron diffraction (PED) techniques in TEM.
Your profile You must hold a Master’s or an equivalent degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or similar. A high motivation to work at the leading edge of measurement science and to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team is essential. Knowledge of English (oral and written) is required and knowledge of German or French would be an advantage. Experience in small-scale mechanical testing (nanoindentation, micropillar compression), electron microscopy based techniques (SEM, FIB and TEM) and programming (e.g. Matlab, Python or C++) is desirable.

The Division of Computational Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is offering a PhD student position to develop and apply cutting-edge computational methodology integrating physicochemical knowledge into deep neural network algorithms for drug discovery applications. Computational methods have become an important pillar in structure-based drug design for accelerated identification and optimization of therapeutics. In addition to more traditional, physicochemical methods, recent developments in deep learning offer new directions in computational drug discovery. In our research group, we combine the best of both worlds, i.e. data-driven deep neural networks and detailed physicochemical models. PhD student position is available to extend ongoing research on the development of novel algorithms for drug design combining physics-based modeling with deep neural network concepts. You will be responsible for the development and implementation of novel deep neural network models based on recent developments in normalizing flows, transformer models, graph neural networks, diffusion models and GFlowNets. Existing collaborations with experimental research groups will facilitate the application and testing of novel algorithms in real life settings.

The department The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education are conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as Region Stockholm.
The division The Division of Eye and Vision at St. Erik Eye Hospital has a major teaching commitment in areas such as optometry and ophthalmology. The division has the Unit of Optometry, which is responsible for the BSc in optometry and the MSc in Clinical Optometry. The unit is also responsible for KI's Optometric Clinic, which is the clinic where the optometry, medical and eye nurse students receive their clinical training and exposure.
St. Erik Eye Hospital St. Erik Eye Hospital is a limited liability company owned by Region Stockholm. The hospital employs more than 450 employees divided into four clinics and six support functions. St. Erik Eye Hospital is the only hospital in Sweden focused on a single organ, the eye. St. Erik Eye Hospital offers emergency and specialized eye care, research and education.
The department and St. Erik Eye Hospital are now looking for a professor who can be involved in developing the activities at the department and the hospital.
Description of the subject area
Optometry is a broad area from physiological mechanisms in the eye and brain via therapeutic and optical interventions in eye changes to visual perception.
Your mission
The position is focused on education (preclinical and clinical) and research. The recipient of the position must conduct optometric research, course management and supervision of degree projects. The professor is expected to be a key person in the work of developing both education and research at the division. The work duties will include both theoretical and clinical teaching at all levels and you are expected to be responsible for strategically developing and leading education in the subject area. You will also work with the development and follow-up of research in close connection with our clinical activities.
The position as Professor is combined with employment as an optometrist at St. Erik's Eye Hospital and the clinical position is planned to be to the extent of 30%.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise, good scientific expertise and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.
Experience of course management, supervision of degree projects and pedagogical development work is a requirement.
The position will be combined with employment as an optometrist at St. Erik Eye Hospital, therefore applicants must hold a degree in optometry and a license as an optometrist with contact lens authorization and requisition rights.
Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).
Assessment criteria
The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (2).
For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
In assessing scientific expertise, we place particular emphasis on experience of successful research in networks with different disciplines.

Job description
Laser and electron beam processes such as welding, heating and additive manufacturing are important in the materials and manufacturing industry. Fundamental understanding and the ability to control these processes to control the microstructures and properties of structural materials is therefore an important enabler for innovative materials and manufacturing processes. However, basic understanding can be difficult to develop for these often very rapid processes that are difficult to characterize. With synchrotron light, however, it is possible to follow the processes in real time and in this project we intend to develop a platform for laser and electron beam processes at the PETRA III synchrotron light source. There we should be able to study these processes in real time with diffraction and imaging and relate them to advanced modelling.

Postdoc or Scientist on Modelling of Digital building twins (a)
Your tasks We are looking for a motivated and experienced candidate to develop, calibrate, and deploy both physics-based and data-driven models of buildings and systems. A particular focus lies on the modelling of HVAC systems with the goal to benchmark energy efficient operation strategies that are developed in the Lab including experimental validation of developments on the Empa demonstrators (NEST, move, ehub). The candidate will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team and industrial partners to translate his/her research ideas into practice. The candidate will support our PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, publish in scientific journals, and participate in national and international conferences.
Your profile You are a highly motivated and dedicated candidate with a PhD degree in Mechanical, Environmental, Civil, Energy engineering or Architecture (or related field). You should have a profound knowledge of building and HVAC simulation (e.g. EnergyPlus), and processing measurements of building energy systems. Programming skills in Python or Matlab/Simulink are desirable. Experience with high-fidelity models such as Modelica or co-simulation in general, is a plus. A good research and publication record is required. The candidate should be proficient in English; good comprehension and oral skills in German are desirable.
