The University of Vermont’s Department of History in The College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Global Environmental History at the rank of Assistant Professor. Period and area of specialization are open. Opportunities to participate in a range of interdisciplinary programs exist, depending on the successful candidate’s research and teaching interests. The position will start in Fall of 2024.

The successful candidate will display innovation and excellence as a scholar and teacher in the field of Global Environmental History. They will also possess an ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and successfully author historical monographs. Other forms of scholarship—including digital scholarship and public history—are valued by the department. Engaging classroom practices and an ability to excite students in the study of history are also expected.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate should:

    • Hold a Ph.D. in History or be an advanced ABD candidate in History;
    • Have the capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from the introductory Global Environmental History survey to more specialized courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of the candidate’s expertise;
    • Be able to successfully mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate master’s students, in addition to professional contributions and service.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include:

  • Maintaining an active research agenda, publishing peer-reviewed books and articles in peer-reviewed journals (though other forms of scholarship, including digital history and public history, are also recognized by the department);
  • Teaching and advising in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • Collaborating with Department of History faculty and staff in departmental governance, program development, scholarship, and service;
  • Serving as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations;
  • Engaging in service and outreach activities at the college, university, regional, state, national and international levels.

The College and Department
In the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), students experience the connectedness and accessibility of a small liberal arts college within a high caliber public research institution. Whether students are pursuing the Fine Arts, the Humanities, Natural Science and Mathematics, or Social Sciences, they have a place here, in the College of Arts and Sciences’ academic landscape. The Department of History at the University of Vermont consists of twenty-two full-time faculty members working in a variety of fields. Each is an outstanding teacher-scholar with excellent national and international reputations as researchers. Geographic coverage in the department is expansive with faculty possessing expertise in U.S., Canadian, European, Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern history. Methodologically, our faculty work in a variety of areas including legal history, the history of slavery, the history of the Holocaust, colonialism and decolonization, gender and sexuality, the history of ideas, religion, visual and material culture, and the history of fashion. Support for faculty research comes in the form of institutional professional development funds as well as substantial departmental gift accounts. Our students receive excellent training in the discipline with a required course in historical methodology and a senior capstone experience. The department also expects students to learn about the diversity of the human experience and requires broad exposure to the history of different global regions. Research and opportunities for independent study are important to the student experience and an active internship program at the departmental and college level exists. The department is a supportive and inclusive environment that privileges academic excellence. In addition to offering the B.A. and M.A. degrees in history, the department also houses the Program in Historic Preservation, which offers an M.S. degree.The Community
UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont. Burlington is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and is located in the beautiful Lake Champlain region, surrounded by the Green and Adirondack Mountains. In addition to the University of Vermont, it is home to three independent colleges that provide an academically stimulating and culturally rich environment.
