Offer Description
Rector
of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wroclaw
announces an open competition for the POST DOC position - assistant professor in the group of research associates
in the Department of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Seeding
within the NCN SONATA 14 2018/31/D/NZ9/01452 project entitled:
"Variable electromagnetic field as a factor regulating gene expression in plants on the example of flax ".
Description of tasks in the position:
- analysis of transient transformants and transgenic plants (especially analyses of reporter system activity levels and oxidative stress analyses);
- subjecting plants to stress factors (biotic and abiotic) and subsequent analysis of these plants (including RT-PCR gene expression, free radical levels, reporter system activity, biochemical analyses);
- preparation of gene constructs for plant transformation;
- planning of experiments; analysis of results; interpretation, presentation and publication of research results.
Project Description:
The project is concerned with investigating how alternating low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) modifies gene expression in plants. In everyday life, ELF-EMF occurs around all electrical and electronic devices or power lines. Many organisms, due to their ability to move around, are locally and temporarily exposed to electromagnetic fields, while plants are not. This is particularly true for crop plants growing in the vicinity of electric power transmission networks or catenary networks (which just generate ELF-EMF). Since there are reports in the literature about the negative effects of electromagnetic fields on plant growth and development, research in this area seems justified. However, the results obtained so far mainly describe the effects of EMF on plant growth, development and physiology, while the mechanism of electromagnetic field action on plants itself remains unexplained.
The project is concerned with investigating how a low-frequency alternating electromagnetic field (EMF) modifies gene expression in plants. Identifying motifs in plant gene promoters that are elements of the plant response to EMF is the main goal of this proposal. The knowledge gained from this project will contribute to a better understanding of the regulation of gene expression in plants and a better understanding of potential modulators of plant growth and development.
Requirements for candidates:
- has a doctoral degree in biological sciences preferentially in biochemistry, biotechnology or molecular biology;
- demonstrates knowledge of techniques for working with plant in vitro cultures;
- is proficient in analytical techniques:
- - in biochemistry (including techniques for working with nucleic acids), plant molecular biology (knowledge of transgenesis techniques, working with a reporter system);
- - In techniques for measuring gene expression (especially real-time PCR);
- - in working with microorganisms (bacteria);
- has experience in working with plant promoters (search, analysis of cis-regulatory fragments, modifications);
- has the ability to work in research teams;
- has experience in research work documented by publications from the Philadelphia List (Candidate should be the first author of at least one paper published in a JCR-listed journal);
- demonstrates the ability to independently perform experiments and conduct a full analysis of the results and present his/her own achievements (preparing publications);
- has proficiency in spoken and written English at the intermediate level (B2);
- preferred knowledge of the Polish language to communicate with the staff of Wroclaw University of Life Sciences and daily independence.
- experience in research using electromagnetic field is welcome;
- the competition is open to individuals who meet the conditions specified in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science of July 20, 2018 (Journal of Laws 2018, item 1668, as amended);
- the doctoral degree was obtained no earlier than 7 years before the year of employment in the project (taking into account the gaps specified in the definition of a post-doc position included in the Regulations for Awarding Funds for the Implementation of Tasks Financed by the National Science Center in the Field of Research Projects, Post-Doctoral Internships and Doctoral Fellowships, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations) with the exception of women who have given birth or adopted a child/children. The period after obtaining a doctoral degree may be extended by 18 months for each child.
- within the last two years before taking up employment in the Project (expected date: December 2022), the candidate has not been employed on the basis of an employment contract in the entity where the research project will be implemented (Wroclaw University of Life Sciences);
- during the period of receiving remuneration for the implementation of the Project, the employee: does not receive other remuneration from funds awarded under direct costs in NCN competitions or is not employed under any other employment contract.

A postdoctoral position will soon (by the end of 2023) be available in the group of Atomic & Molecular Physics, Dept. Physics, University of Trento, Italy.
The position is for 1 year (renewable for a second year) to work on a recently funded project (by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, part of Next Generation EU - Cluster 4: Digital, Industry and Space) aimed at exploring at the atomistic level the reaction mechanisms leading to the degradation of space-technology polymers by thermospheric oxygen radicals and ions. More information on the project are available here
The successful candidate will focus on performing single collision reactivity experiments between O+ ions (either in the ground 4S or a known mixture of ground and metastable electronic states) and small molecules appropriately chosen to retain the relevant chemical functions of polymers commonly used in space applications (e.g. graphite, polystyrene and Kapton), but can be brought to the gas phase. The experiments will make use of tandem mass spectrometry techniques for the measurement of absolute reactive cross sections and branching ratios as a function of the velocity of the ions. Complementary experiments to assess the role of O+ excited states will be carried out in collaboration with the Institut de Chimie Physique (Paris-Saclay University) and at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility (France).
Required skills&training: PhD in Physics, Physical Chemistry or related fields, high motivation towards experimental work, strong background in mass spectrometry, gas phase chemistry, ion sources and ion guides
Location:Trento is located in north-east Italy and is a beautiful location close to the Dolomiti mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with plenty of possibilities for outdoor activities and many options for an enjoyable lifestyle.

About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an important tool for sustainable decision-making. In the last decades, there was large progress in terms of the number, complexity and accuracy of impact categories covered; especially for those related to ecosystem quality. However, there are still some gaps. This includes impacts of noise and artificial lights on biodiversity that are not yet covered on a global level. This PhD will therefore aim to develop models for quantifying the impacts of noise pollution and artificial light on biodiversity (terrestrial, marine and/or freshwater) within the framework of LCA.
IndEcol is a pioneer in the development and application of industrial ecology methods, as well as the use of large data sets and scientific computing in industrial ecology. We focus on understanding resource use and environmental pollution associated with human activities, assessing the environmental aspects of different technologies and modeling society’s use of materials. IndEcol combines world-class competence in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Input-Output analysis (I/O), and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) with scientists’ contribution to IPCC and IPBES assessment reports, the International Resource Panel, active participation to the Life-Cycle Initiative hosted by UN Environment, and numerous publications featured in high-ranked journals. IndEcol hosts its own International MSc program and contributes to NTNU’s engineering education.
