Responsibilities
The Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for providing leadership for the hospital, managing associate veterinarians and support staff as well as being responsible for creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered. In partnership with the Hospital Director, the Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for the financial performance of the hospital, preparing operating and capital budgets, and meeting budget expectations. The position can either involve clinical work or be purely non-clinical depending on the Directors focus and interests.
Advancing Medical Care
- Oversees surgical and medical cases for all veterinarians, ensuring the best possible outcome, accurate estimates and charging, and excellent client communication and education.
- Maintains and improves quality of medical and surgical procedures.
- Establishment of medical protocols.
- Recommendation of hospital inventory.
- Manages and documents the associate veterinarians required hours of continuing education, credits per calendar year and CE completion.
Leading the Staff and Hospital
- Participates in the recruiting and interviewing process for veterinary surgeons and when appropriate general staff members.
- Monitors veterinary surgeon performance and production.
- Prepares the veterinary surgeon work schedules.
- Develops and monitors hospital-specific client compliance protocols and procedures.
- Participates in technician appraisal and counseling sessions by relaying appropriate information to the Hospital Director.
- Partners with the Hospital Director to make hiring and termination recommendations.
- Trains all medical staff, including the mentoring of new graduates.
- Supports the Hospital Director and Senior Veterinary Nurse in the development and delivery of staff training programs.
- Creates a positive work environment and works with the Hospital Director to resolve staff problems, concerns, and conflicts.
- In partnership with the Hospital Director, develops a workplace conductive to high employee morale, ensuring positive working relationships between clients, veterinarians and staff.
Financial Responsibilities
- Responsible for the financial performance of the hospital including revenue and managing hospital expenses.
- In conjunction with the Hospital Director prepares an operating budget and capital budget.
- In conjunction with the Hospital Director oversee revenue and help develop success of the practice by monitoring key financial reports.
- Responsibility for overseeing individual veterinarian production.
Qualification and Skills:
- A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university which can be registered with the Hong Kong Veterinary Surgeons Registration Board.
- Must be organized, detailed, focused and work well under pressure.
- Team orientated with a happy, positive attitude.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A commitment to practicing the highest standard of veterinary medicine and upholding the veterinary code of ethics
- Experience in staff development, coaching and mentoring new graduates.
- Demonstrates professional and courteous presentation with staff and clients.
- Must be a strong communicator- preferably familiar with emotional intelligence and conflict competence.
- Knowledge of exotic species an advantage but not necessary.
