Eligibility conditions (criteria)
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Scholarships are available for international students.
- The program is open to applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, (applied) physics, materials science or equivalent.
- Students in the final year of these programs will also be considered.
- Applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in another field of engineering are invited to join the program through a personalized preparatory program.
- Belgian Bachelors in IR architecture, physics, chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, industrial sciences – electronics / ICT, engineering sciences or KMS polytechnic department can apply for the preparatory program of 30 ECTS.
- Language requirements for international students: ( TOEFL at least 570 or 87, IELTS at least 6.5 ).

Opportunity cost
(Partial funding)
- After your application, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel can grant one of the full scholarships of EUR 10,000 per year to students of the European Master in Photonics from VUB. This scholarship is intended to cover the cost of living inherent in studying in Brussels.
VUB B-PHOT Excellence Scholarships:
- three entrance scholarships of 1000 euros , at the start of the first semester of the first year of the MSc. The winners are the 3 highest ranked students according to our selection criteria.
- three continuation grants of 1500 euros , at the start of the second semester of the first year of the MSc. will be awarded to the 3 best students based on academic performance after semester 1. Also students who have not received the entrance scholarship will be considered for the continuation scholarship.
- an excellence scholarship will be awarded, worth 5000 euros , at the start of the second year of the master’s.
Note:
- All students who register for the MSc. in photonics at VUB are eligible to receive a B-PHOT excellence scholarship from the research group without a separate application procedure.
- Applicants who receive the B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship must agree to do an MSc. thesis at the VUB.
- Graduates with honors and demonstrating excellence in knowledge and applications will be invited to apply for a doctorate at VUB B-PHOT.
