Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine and Coastal Resilience in the Discipline of Geography at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Marine Institute and is able from the 1st of April 2020 for a duration of 12 months.

Job Description:

We are seeking an enthusiastic early stage researcher who has experience of the impacts of change on coastal and marine communities to join our project ‘Achieving Resilience in the Marine and Coastal Environment.’ The anticipated outcome of the project will be to deliver a set of integrated and coherent roadmaps to (1) Local Authorities and (2) Coastal Communities to facilitate a transition to increased resilience to a changing climate across Ireland.

Duties:

  • To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To disseminate the outcomes of the research, including peer-reviewed academic publications of international standing
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project
  • To contribute to the preparation and production of technical progress reports to the funding agency.
  • To attend and present project progress at bi-annual steering group meeting and parallel research project meetings.
  • To represent the project at national and international meetings as appropriate.

Essential Requirements:

  • Must hold a PhD qualification in a relevant subject (geomorphology, coastal management, environmental science).
  • Understanding of resilience, preferably in a marine or coastal context.
  • Practical experience of stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience of organising stakeholder workshops and effectively capturing and communicating outcomes through reports, presentations and social media.
  • Appropriate research experience.
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • Ability to work well within a team.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Understanding of resilience, preferably in a marine or coastal context.
  • Practical experience of stakeholder engagement.

Salary: €37,874 to €42,560 per annum, pro-rata for short or part-time contracts

Start date: Position is available from 01 April 2020.
