Architecture, Planning and Landscape – Assistant Professor

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape has an opening for a full-time (1.0 FTE) twenty- four month Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2020.

Applicants are expected to teach and support curriculum development in the specific program outlined below, contribute to student supervision, conduct interdisciplinary research and actively engage in faculty service. The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic teaching and research related to sustainability studies, an understanding of interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a demonstrated interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning as it relates to sustainability and undergraduate programming.

Specific duties include:

  • Teaching in required courses that are part of the Sustainability Studies Undergraduate Certificate and develop new elective courses in the Sustainability Studies Program. Required courses include SUST201 Exploring Sustainability; SUST401 Sustainability Research Methods; SUST403 Sustainability Research Project; SUST501 Sustainability Capstone Course. Teaching assignments may be revised based on program needs. Any such revisions will be communicated at least 10 business days prior to the start of the relevant semester.
  • Assist the Academic Lead, Sustainability Studies, in the development of interdisciplinary community and based research projects at local, regional, national and international levels.

The successful candidate must possess:

  • A PhD in Sustainability Studies or in a closely related discipline
  • A Postdoctoral Scholarship in Sustainability Studies or in a closely related discipline (minimum one year)
  • Teaching experience in undergraduate-level courses founded in experiential learning and applied research
  • Curriculum and program development experience of university sustainability program, with demonstrated collaboration across academic institutions, government, private sectors and nonprofits to develop and manage research projects embedded in coursework and beyond
  • Interdisciplinary research experience in Sustainability and a familiarity with in-depth understanding and application of research methodologies; experience in Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) is preferred
  • An in-depth understanding and application of sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a development context
  • Desirable qualifications include:
    • Knowledge of sustainability studies and its embedded certificates
    • International development experience
    • Understanding of UCalgary’s Institutional Sustainability Strategy
    • Experience in organizing and managing community engagement events
