Biology Principal Scientist / Associate Director

Pharmaron acquired the Hoddesdon campus, consisting of several purpose built scientific and administrative buildings together with a purpose built conference area in February 2017. The research building has more than 5,000m2 of premier R&D space and houses an established Process Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Drug Discovery team. The Hoddesdon site has state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard facilities for the development of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), formulation development and process chemistry.
The Pharmaron UK Drug Discovery team provides world-class drug discovery leadership to our partners in the life-science industry. As trusted collaborators, and in synergy with the unique capabilities and resources of the global Pharmaron group, our science teams aim to create small-molecule preclinical candidates of exceptional quality. As part of our expansion, we are seeking a Biology Principal Scientist to become an integral part of the drug discovery teams and Pharmaron’s Drug Discovery Services Biology capabilities.
Essential Requirements
- A Ph.D. degree in the area of Pharmacology or Biological Sciences.
- Leadership of in vitro biology for small molecule drug discovery programs including delivery of data packages to support delivery of Candidate molecules.
- Technical expertise in areas of assay screening (HTS/MTS) including phenotypic assays and a range of cell-based screening techniques with multi parameter readouts.
- Experience of developing work plans to build mechanistic pharmacology understanding for novel targets.
- Outstanding knowledge of biological sciences gained through working within a drug discovery environment across multiple target classes and a diverse range of therapeutic areas.
- Experience of working within a CRO in a client-facing role preparing scientific project proposals.
- Familiarity with the use of industry standard IT tools, data analysis and statistical software packages.
- Knowledge of in vitro biological assays and associated quantitative analysis.
- Knowledge of toxicology, DMPK and chemical concepts.
- Track record of scientific publication.
- Ability to critically review scientific opportunities.
- Problem solving and leadership are essential to be successful in this role.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Lead, design and deliver the biology strategy for small molecule drug discovery projects from hit- finding through to candidate selection.
- Provide scientific and technical leadership to develop assays to address key project questions, such as mechanism of action and biological differentiation.
- Interpret results and integrate with data from other disciplines, such as building relationships between in vitro and in vivo data sets, to drive projects forward and generate timely key decision-making data.
- Apply innovative problem solving across the PDDSE projects.
- Work collaboratively with Pharmaron platforms and partner teams, regularly present biology plans, data and achievements to external partners and internal project team members.
- Critically develop biology plans and proposals for new projects, working with partners to implement them successfully.
