ARC GRANT FUNDED PHD SCHOLARSHIP – THE AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE IN THE PACIFIC ISLANDS

Applications are invited for a scholarship leading to the degree of PhD in the School Social Sciences (Department of Politics and International Relations), University of Adelaide

The scholarship is part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Project, DP200101994: Pacific Partners? The operation and endurance of the Australia-New Zealand alliance in the Pacific Islands (Chief Investigators: Professor Joanne Wallis and Dr Anna Powles (Massey University)).

Professor Wallis, who will supervise the successful candidate’s research, is interested in security and Australia’s strategy in the Pacific Islands. Dr Powles is interested in security and New Zealand’s policy in the Pacific Islands. The broader ARC project focuses on how the Australia-New Zealand alliance operates in the Pacific Islands, in particular, how the two states manage differing approaches and interests, and why it endures.

The HDR candidate’s project is expected to be in the field of international relations/political science. It is anticipated that it will analyse how the Australia-New Zealand alliance operates in an international context, with a particular focus on interaction in international institutions and the influence of third-party states, including funded fieldwork in Wellington, Washington, and New York. However, there is flexibility to change the topic to reflect the candidate’s interests and expertise.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a minimum of Honours 2A result or equivalent in Political Science, International Relations, or an equivalent discipline.

Ideally the candidate will commence their studies by June 2021, but a later start may be able to be negotiated (particularly for interstate candidates). Remote candidature will also be considered.

Stipend

The scholarship is for three years’ full-time study, with a stipend of $28,597 (2021 rate, indexed annually) per annum for up to 3 years. It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval. The successful candidate will be eligible to receive funding from the grant to conduct fieldwork and to attend national/international conferences. The candidate will also be able to apply for other University of Adelaide HDR funds for which postgraduate students are eligible.
