Postdoctoral Scholarship in Non-Coding RNAs in Cancer -Uppsala University (UU)

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the research group of Andor Pivarcsi, at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM), Uppsala University, Sweden.

Our research group studies the role of non-coding RNAs such (both long-non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs)) in tissue homeostasis and carcinogenesis. The group takes advantage of using a translational approach with analyzing transcriptomic alterations in patient material and performing functional experiments using state-of the-art in vitro and in vivo disease models. The group works in close collaboration with other groups within non-coding RNA-research and skin cancer. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be part of a team with an enthusiasm for science and a longstanding interest in non-coding RNA biology and in the skin. For further information about our work, please visit: https://www.imbim.uu.se/research-groups/cancer/pivarcsi-andor/

Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible to perform in vitro and in vivo mechanistic experiments in a study that aims to characterize the role of non-coding RNAs in skin cancer and their mode of action. The successful candidate will perform studies on primary cell cultures, patient samples and mouse models of skin cancer, such as tumor xenograft models. The candidate is anticipated to perform experiments using RNA interference and CRISPR-based gene activation/inactivation to modulate non-coding RNA-activity, in cell culture and 3D skin models. The successful candidate will be anticipated to take responsibility for the research project, including following relevant literature and identifying and communicating need for further development.

Qualifications: The candidate should possess a PhD degree obtained in 2019 or later in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. biomedicine, molecular biology, pharmacy, medicine). Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. The successful candidate has a genuine interest in in medical research, molecular biology and problem solving. Experience with and a deep understanding of molecular biology techniques and cell culture work is a requirement. Experience with animal models related to cancer is not a requirement but meritorious. Experience in RNA research, immunoprecipitation, RNA interference and CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing is not a requirement but meritorious.

The applicant must be able to work both independently as well as a part of a team. The applicant is expected to have an ability to solve problems and openness to learn new methods. An excellent knowledge of English language, both oral and written, is required. Emphasis is placed on personal suitability.

Environment: Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Uppsala is one the oldest cities in Sweden and Uppsala University was founded in 1477. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44,000 students, 7,100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University conducts research and teaching at the highest international level with about 250 employees, of which about 40 are doctoral students. The research environment has a high number of international students, postdocs, and PIs and the language used in the lab is English. The research is focused on three areas: biochemistry / molecular cell biology, genomics and microbiology / immunology. The Pivarcsi research group at IMBIM now seeks a motivated researcher interested in working with RNA research and cancer.

Scholarship/salary: A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt. We will also give full support to applicants who have the ambition to apply for independent postdoctoral fellowships.

Application: An application must contain the following documents in English: 1.Curriculum vitae including relevant qualifications 2. A complete list of publications. 3. A letter describing the motivation to join the group. 4. Contact details for two reference persons.

Applications should be sent by email to: andor.pivarcsi@imbim.uu.se with the Subject: ”Application_ncRNAs_in_skin_cancer”
