Application Process
Applicants must submit an electronic copy of their completed application as a single PDF file (excluding confidential letters of reference) via email to tara.lock@utoronto.ca by 4:30 pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2021. The submission email must have the subject title “DKG 2022 App – NAME OF APPLICANT” and include the applicant’s student number in the body of the email. Components 1 through 5 below are to be combined by the applicant into a single PDF file, using the file naming convention “APPLICANT LAST NAME, first initial – DKG2022 App”. Hardcopy application materials will not be accepted.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their referees email the completed DKG Letter of Reference forms directly to tara.lock@utoronto.ca by the application deadline. Incomplete applications or late materials will not be considered.
Application Package
Applicants must retain all of their hardcopy application materials (including transcripts) until late February, as the originals may be requested by the Toronto World Fellowships Committee or the International World Fellowships Committee.
A complete application package will include all of the following items:
- Completed application form (posted when competition opens in October);
- Copy of a valid study permit;
- Scans/copies of original official transcripts from all previous post-secondary studies. Certified/validated scans of unofficial transcripts will only be accepted for international transcripts;
- Official University of Toronto etranscript showing all grades obtained to date. Encryption on the U of T etranscript will need to be removed before combining with the rest of the application. Applicants may use freely available PDF software such as Adobe Acrobat Reader to “print to PDF” in order to create an unencrypted “copy” of the file. If an applicant has not yet obtained grades at U of T, the applicant must order and provide within their application package a Letter Confirming Registration (allow 5 business days for processing);
- Proof of English-language proficiency; and
- Three (3) confidential letters of reference using the DKG Confidential Letter of Reference form (posted when competition opens in October). These forms must be emailed by each referee as a PDF attachment to tara.lock@utoronto.ca with the subject title “DKG 2022 Ref – NAME OF APPLICANT” by the application deadline. For the PDF file, please use the file naming convention “APPLICANT LAST NAME, first initial – DKG2022 Referee last name”.
Please review the Application Requirements section below for further important details.

Written statements should be limited to 500 words. Please be concise and include specific background information.

Study Permit
A study permit is an immigration document that allows individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents to live in Canada temporarily while they study at a post-secondary institution for 6 months or more.
Further information on study permits can be found on the Centre for International Experience’s Getting a Study Permit web page.
Applicants must provide a copy of their valid study permit within their application package.
Transcripts
Applicants must provide scans/copies of original official transcripts from all previous post-secondary studies and a scan of their original official University of Toronto transcript (or etranscript) showing all grades obtained to date. If an applicant has not yet obtained grades at U of T, the applicant must order and provide within their application package a Letter Confirming Registration (allow 5 business days for processing).
- Certification/validation of transcripts may be requested from the U of T graduate unit/registrar well in advance of the application deadline. The graduate unit/registrar may email the certified transcripts directly to tara.lock@utoronto.ca if a copy cannot be emailed to the applicant;

- The U of T etranscript can be ordered online through students’ ACORN accounts. Encryption on the U of T etranscript will need to be removed before combining with the rest of the application, so applicants may use freely available PDF software such as Adobe Acrobat Reader to “print to PDF” in order to create an unencrypted “copy” of the file;
- Grading legends must be provided with every transcript;
- Certified/validated scans of unofficial transcripts will only be accepted for international transcripts; and

If a traditional transcript cannot be obtained, the applicant must provide certified, official evidence of the post‐secondary or university degree, diploma, or certificate from the appropriate institution. This evidence should list the subjects studied and the grades received during each year of enrolment.
English-Language Proficiency
Proof of English-language proficiency is not required if English is the applicant’s first language.
Otherwise, applicants must request a letter from their U of T graduate unit well in advance of the application deadline. The letter should confirm that the School of Graduate Studies’ English-language proficiency requirements were met when the applicant was offered admission to the U of T graduate program. There are no particular formatting standards for this letter.
Letters of Reference
Each applicant may have three (3) references evaluated in this competition. If more than 3 references are received for one applicant, only the first three references received will be used.
The references should be written in English; otherwise, a complete and original English translation of the letter must be provided.
The three (3) referees must be:
- Teachers under whom the applicant has studied or pursued research; and
- Individuals who supervised the applicant in work related to their proposed field of study.
At least one (1) referee should be an academic and at least one (1) referee should have supervised the applicant in a professional or work‐related capacity.
Each referee must complete the DKG Confidential Letter of Reference form. Referees may include a standard letter of reference (written as a letter) in addition to the completed form.
The DKG Confidential Letter of Reference form must be emailed by each referee as a PDF attachment to the Graduate Awards Office with the subject title “DKG 2022 – NAME OF APPLICANT” by the application deadline.
It is each applicant’s responsibility to ensure their references are submitted by their referees before the application deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
