The CRUK Beatson Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe’s leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.

The Sansom laboratory has world-leading expertise in development and characterisation of genetically engineered murine models of colorectal cancer (CRC) which accurately recapitulate the intricate nature of the human disease. Recent advances in sequencing technology and biological models have resulted in paradigm shifts in our understanding of CRC biology, but unfortunately have failed to significantly impact upon patient care. The overarching aim of the ACRCelerate project is to de-risk future clinical trials by bridging the gap between tumour molecular signatures and targeted clinical trials. We currently have a position for a graduate or PhD to support all aspects of research within the group, with a particular focus on characterisation of cutting-edge models of colorectal cancer (in vitro and in vivo). The successful appointee would alongside Colin Steele (Clinician Scientist/Honorary Consultant Surgeon) to align models with human disease, and study mechanisms of disease recurrence and progression with an aim of translation to human studies.

You should possess a degree at 2(1) or above in genetics, cancer biology, molecular biology or a related subject. PhD candidates will also be considered for this role. Whilst training will be provided, you will be expected to be proactive in your work as well as being highly organised, with meticulous record keeping and attention to detail. The Sansom laboratory is a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary group and being a team player is essential. Previous experience in use of genetically engineered in vivo cancer models, tissue culture, and transcriptional profiling are not essential but would be advantageous as would be the holding of a current Home Office Personal Licence.
