Post-doc scholarship (2 years) in staphylococcal bacteriophages DNA replication – Umeå University (UmU)

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine, Infection Biology offer a postdoctoral scholarship to study staphylococcal bacteriophages DNA replication. Application deadline: 1 June 2022.

Bacteriophages or phages are intrinsically related to pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance and one of the main factors in bacterial evolution. Additionally, they have the potential to be used as therapeutic tools. Thus, understanding how phages replicate their DNA is critical for our success combating bacterial infections. We study staphylococcal phages in our lab but also Mobile Genetic Elements in Staphylococcus aureus: i) Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome (SCC elements), responsible for Methicillin Resistance S. aureus or MRSA; ii) Staphylococcus aureus Pathogenicity Islands (SaPIs). This project focuses mainly on bacteriophages.

We now offer a post-doc scholarship to study DNA replication of staphylococcal bacteriophages using a multidisciplinary approach: microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and structural biology. The research will take place in an international and well-funded (Wallenberg Foundation) research group. The Umeå Core Facility Electron Microscopy is well equipped with a Titan Krios TEM, Falcon 3 detector, Volta phase plate, autoloader, etc. The X-Ray Crystallography Platform is also well equipped with in-house X-Ray source, mosquito robot, etc. Synchrotron’s access is secured.

More info about the lab is here: http://www.imsresearchlab.com/.

The scholarship is full-time for two years. Tentative start day is the 1st of July 2022.

Competence requirements position

To be eligible for the scholarship you should have a PhD, or equivalent, in microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry or related discipline. We are seeking applicants with experience in microbiology and bacteriophages. Applicants with a strong background in cryoEM are also encouraged to apply. We expect the candidates to be able to work independently and as part of a team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
