Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
We are looking for someone with great scientific competence in immunology, especially allergy and/or mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract, who wants to work in a strong research environment together with other successful researchers in immunology and inflammation at the Division of Immunology and Allergy, Department of Medicine Solna. The department is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet and offers unique opportunities for interactions and good opportunities for development for you and your research. You will also work together with clinical immunology at Karolinska University Hopsital to develop and implement new research at the clinic.
Description of the subject area
The position aims to strengthen the subject immunology, with a focus on human mucosal immunity. The field of immunology has for a long time been strong at Karolinska Institutet and has expanded further in recent years. The development is partly driven by the knowledge gaps that exist in infection, autoimmunity, immunodeficiencies, cancer and other areas, partly by the development of methods in several areas that can be applied to molecular and cellular immunology. The last few years with the Covid-19 pandemic have put the spotlight on mucosal immunology and the need for knowledge about immune responses and disease development in the case of infection in the respiratory tract and the development of immunity after vaccination. We are now hiring an academic leader with a strong research profile in the subject who can further develop the translational research. The person who is employed will be a link between Karolinska Institutet and the Department of Clincial Immunology and Transfusion Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital. Dependent on your qualifications the position may be combined with a position at the Karolinska University Hospital.
Your mission
We are looking for a person with internationally successful research in the field of translational immunology. You are expected to develop the subject area of mucosal immunity, including the mapping of new disease mechanisms and the development of new diagnostic methods in clinical immunology. Development and application of new analysis methods in the immunological field is a central part of the job description for the position. In addition, the role includes data integration to improve the conditions for diagnosis and/or prognosis. The position also involves teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
Applicants must be established and conduct internationally leading research in the field, have well documented collaboration and leadership skills and experience in translational research in a clinical environment. The applicant must have received national and/or international research grants in competition and have the potential to secure further grants in the field. The applicant must also have experience in supervising doctoral students for their dissertation.
Assessment criteria
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).
We attach particular importance to research quality and future potential for relevant and translational research in clinical immunology.
For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown:
- Experience of translational research in mucosal immunity, especially related to the airways.
- Experience of establishing and taking care of collections of clinical samples.
- Documented ability of strong leadership and supervision.
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
