ESCMID Excellence Award for Scientific Contributions in CM/ID
The ESCMID Excellence Award for Scientific Contributions in CM/ID recognises and acknowledges outstanding contributions in science, education or professional affairs in clinical microbiology and/or infectious diseases.
Award
The Excellence Awardee is distinguished by becoming an ESCMID fellow and will share his/her career achievements during the keynote lecture at ECCMID.
Who can be nominated
- Senior scientists that are professionally active and prepared to give a keynote lecture during ECCMID. It is not required for a nominee to be an ESCMID member.
Important:
ESCMID Executive Committee Members are not eligible for nomination during their term in office and for two years thereafter.
Nomination process
For the online nomination, please be prepared to provide the following information/documents:
- Nomination letter (single PDF file) that includes information in the following order:
- Biographical sketch of the nominee (maximum two pages)
- List of the top ten relevant publications of the candidate and their number of citations (plus note the full number of published journal articles)
- Motivation letter (it should be concise, up to 500 words, highlighting outstanding lifetime scientific achievements of the candidate in the CM/ID)
- Two support letters from individuals outside the nominating institution
Selection and notification
The Excellence Awardee is selected from received nominations by the ESCMID Executive Committee, and notification is sent in December.
The award is presented at the ECCMID Welcome Ceremony by the ESCMID President. A dedicated session will also be held during which the awardee will give a 45-60 minutes keynote lecture.
ESCMID Lifetime Achievements Award
The ESCMID Lifetime Achievements Award recognises and acknowledges an outstanding contribution to ESCMID mission.
Award
The ESCMID Lifetime Achievements Awardee is distinguished by becoming an ESCMID fellow and is awarded during ECCMID.
Who can be nominated
- Senior investigators/clinicians who are/were active ESCMID members
Important:
ESCMID Executive Committee Members are not eligible for nomination during their term in office and for two years thereafter.
Nomination process
For the online nomination, please be prepared to provide the following information/documents:
- Motivation letter (short- up to 250 words, describing candidates’ major contribution to ESCMID and external reach on behalf of ESCMID)
- Two support letters from ESCMID Members
Selection and notification
The ESCMID Lifetime Achievement Award is selected from received nominations by the ESCMID Executive Committee, and notification is sent in December.
The award is presented at the ECCMID Opening Ceremony by the ESCMID President.
ESCMID Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Infection
This award is targeted at someone who has contributed significantly to the area of infection, possibly by driving international policies and/or education standards and/or public engagement, but not specifically by a scientific contribution.
Who can be nominated
- Anyone who excels in the field of infection. It is not required for a nominee to be an ESCMID member.
Important:
ESCMID Executive Committee Members are not eligible for nomination during their term in office and for two years thereafter.
Award
The ESCMID Awardee for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Infection is distinguished by becoming an ESCMID fellow and is awarded during ECCMID.
Nomination process
For the online nomination, please be prepared to provide the following information/documents:
- Motivation letter (short- up to 500 words, describing candidates’ major contribution and the global reach to fight infections, including collaboration with NGOs, governmental institutions, and public health organizations, contribution to education and mentoring)
- Biographical sketch of the nominee
- Two support letters from fellows who can confirm the nominee’s dedication in the field of infection
Selection and notification
ESCMID Executive Committee will evaluate all applications with special attention to the following:
- participation in public health programmes (governmental and NOGs driven) as a KOL
- participation in the outreach programmes as a field clinician or coordinator
- contributions to patients’ education/awareness
- mentoring the junior fellows
- public visibility (activity in media, social media, publications)
- other civic services/activities
The ESCMID Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Infection is selected from received nominations by the ESCMID Executive Committee, and notification is sent in December.
The award is presented at the ECCMID Opening Ceremony by the ESCMID President.
Young Investigator Award
The Young Investigator Award acknowledges excellence in research and stimulates further work at a top scientific level.
Award
The Young Investigator Award is a prize of 5,000 € to be used for any form of professional development (purchase of books, educational materials, attendance in congresses or training, etc.). ESCMID will request a final expense report and follow up with the awardee after two years.
Who can apply
- ESCMID member whose research is based on laboratory investigations, clinical trials/studies, animal studies, or a combination thereof
- PhD with at least three years of postdoc experience but no longer than eight years* post-graduation
- MD or MD/PhD with at least three years of postdoc or clinical experience but no longer than five years* from completion of clinical training/specialist
*This time excludes maternity/paternity leave time for each child (one year), and health-related leave if applicable.

- Online CV template (incl. personal statement, description of research interests and projects, list of top publications with three first author publications, etc.)
- Copy of the highest degree obtained (to be uploaded in English)
- Colour photo (.tiff, .eps or .jpg; max. 4MB), at least 4 x 6 cm with 300 dpi resolution for publication
Selection and notification
The ESCMID Executive Committee selects Young Investigator Awardees and notifications are sent in December. The ESCMID Scientific Affairs Officer will present the award at ECCMID.
During ECCMID 2024, the Young Investigator Awardee(s) will be honoured during a special session. Each awardee will be asked to give a 15-20 minutes lecture on their main field of research. The award winners will be announced on all ESCMID communication channels.
Emerging Young Investigators Award
This award aims to acknowledge and support emerging new scientists and/or clinicians from LMIC active in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.
Award
The Emerging Young Investigators Award is a prize of 5,000 € to be used for any form of professional development (purchase of books, educational materials, attendance in congresses or training, etc.). ESCMID will request a final expense report and follow up with the awardee after two years. In addition, ESCMID will cover registration, travel expenses and accommodation at ECCMID in the year of awards.
Who can apply
- ESCMID members active in research is based on laboratory investigations, clinical trials/studies, animal studies, or a combination thereof
- Applicant holds an LMIC passport and is professionally active in the LMIC country
- PhD with at least three years of postdoc experience but no longer than eight years* post-graduation
- MD or MD/PhD with at least three years of postdoc or clinical experience but no longer than five years* from completion of clinical training/specialist
- Published at least three first-author publications in the last five years
*This time excludes maternity/paternity leave time for each child (one year), and health-related leave if applicable.

TAE Outstanding Trainee Award
The TAE Outstanding Trainee Award recognises multi-skilled medical trainees engaged in extracurricular activities, teaching, networking and collaboration in clinical microbiology (CM) and/or infectious diseases (ID).
Application is open annually. Two awardees are usually selected, one in CM and one in ID.
Award
TAE Outstanding Trainee Award is 1,000 €. In addition, it covers ECCMID 2024 travel (up to EUR 500 €), registration, ESCMID Summer School 2024 travel (up to EUR 500 €), registration, and accommodation.
Reimbursement of registration and travel expenses will take place after the event based on proof of attendance and proof of expenses paid by the awardee.
Who can apply
- ESCMID Member and ESCMID Young Scientist Member or LMIC Member fulfilling the criteria of Young Scientist Membership
- The applicant must be registered in an accredited training programme which leads to specialisation in CM, ID or other closely related specialities/subspecialties
Important: PhD only students and MD consultants acquiring a second speciality in CM/ID are not eligible; TAE Steering Committee members are not eligible
Application process
To be considered for the TAE Outstanding Trainee Award, the applicant needs to submit the following:
- Letter of support/recommendation from a senior/superior familiar with the applicant’s work
- CV file, a single PDF no longer than five pages (with focus on national and international teaching experience, networking efforts, collaborations, civic and social service and include research activities, publications in peer-reviewed journals)
- Proof of the applicant’s identity (passport or national ID card)
- Proof of training status
- Personal statement (maximum 150 words)
Selection and notification
ESCMID TAE Steering Committee evaluates applications, and the ESCMID Executive Committee approves awardees. Award selection outcome notifications will be sent in early December 2023.
The names of successful applicants will be published on the ECCMID website and other ESCMID publications.
