Social Science and Physical Science Research Fellows in Conflict, Disaster and Migration, London

UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) and the Humanitarian Institute are now recruiting 2 post-doctoral Research Fellows. Both positions are available immediately and are funded for 1 year full time in the first instance at UCL grade 7 (£35,328 to £42,701 per annum).

The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is a cross-UCL Institute, which leads research, knowledge exchange and advanced teaching in the area of risk and disaster reduction (RDR). The Humanitarian Institute is a new UCL initiative budding off from the IRDR, supported by the Provost, which aims to mobilise UCL’s research, expertise and teaching to impact global humanitarian challenges.

The Social science research fellow will use mixed methods approaches to investigate the complex issues of forced migration in a developing country prone to natural hazards, impacts on the host populations and conditions for returning, in relation to the Rohingya Exodus and other conflict zones. They will address issues of identity and gender-based politics, and vulnerability of refugees to natural disasters and health crises.

The Physical science research fellow will use monitoring and modelling approaches to track the complex issues that arise from a large exodus of refugees fleeing political upheaval and arriving in a developing nation prone to natural hazard risks. They will develop systems to detect, monitor and model the exposure to natural hazards.

Both research fellows should hold a PhD in a relevant field. They will work collaboratively together, with the rest of the IRDR and Humanitarian Institute research teams, and with our international partners to build their capacity for research in this area as well as the local capacity to cope with this volume of political refugees.
