Caution Advised for Travelers to Spain and Italy
If you’re planning a vacation to Spain or Italy, heightened vigilance is recommended. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has recently reported several cases of West Nile fever in these countries. According to France Diplomacy, as cited by “Ouest-France”, cases have been identified in the Spanish provinces of Cadiz and Seville as well as in northern Italy.
Understanding West Nile Fever
West Nile fever is caused by a virus transmitted primarily through mosquito bites. Most infected individuals do not show any symptoms, but about 20% of cases can present flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, joint pain, and digestive issues. In rare instances, serious neurological complications such as aseptic meningitis, meningoencephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome may occur.
Increased Risks for Vulnerable Individuals
Particularly at risk are those who have been infected through blood transfusions or organ transplants. In 2% of cases, the infection can prove fatal. That is why individuals who have stayed in areas where the virus is prevalent are advised to refrain from donating blood for some time after returning.
Measures to Protect Against Mosquitoes
Currently, there are no specific antiviral treatments or vaccines to prevent West Nile fever. Prevention primarily involves measures to avoid mosquito bites. Here are some recommendations to protect yourself:
- Use mosquito nets.
- Apply mosquito repellents.
- Wear long, loose clothing.
- Avoid going outdoors in the evening when mosquitoes are most active.
- Eliminate standing water around your home.
By following these tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of infection from the West Nile virus during your travels to Spain and Italy. Stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to enjoy a safe holiday.
