This position has an end date of 1 year from hire, with the possibility of extension based on funding.

The Research Assistant will work with the PI and coordinate interaction on several research projects aiming at gaining a better understanding of the basis of neurodevelopmental disorder, developing new tools for information, and treatment in NDD.

The Research Assistant will interact with scientists from across the country, and help the multidisciplinary team effectively exchange information and progress. The Research Assistant will be responsible for administrative research tasks, assisting with ethics preparation, assisting in general budget and subgrant management, as well as managing and scheduling group teleconferences/meetings.

Duties

  • Be familiar with the operation of the clinical research which will include an in-depth review of the protocol and source materials.
  • Assist with recruitment of participants for the clinical research by creating posts for the lab’s Facebook page and the clinical trial website, distributing posters/other materials, preparing for talks given by the PI, etc.
  • Assist with the set-up/clean-up of tests and tasks as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling participant visits, including organizing all researchers/clinicians that will be needed for the visit (test administrators, nurses, study doctor, etc.) and assisting with travel arrangements for the participant and their family.
  • Enter and verify the data into electronic databases such as REDCap from source documents.
  • Assist with the transfer or shipping of samples as needed.
  • Keep research participant data/information confidential and secured.
  • Assist with keeping track of participant visits/phone calls and complete proper documentation.
  • Assist with ensuring personnel training, CVs, licenses, protocol, and consent versions, etc. are up to date.
  • Assist with ensuring the Memory Game is completed properly by participants as well as analysis of the results.
  • Schedule and coordinate meetings with investigators from across the country.
  • Fill in applications in REMO and other ethics systems.
  • Work with the research team on other duties as they arise.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; Background in science with a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in neuroscience, genetics, nursing, or related field preferred.
  • Background knowledge of genetics and genomics is preferred.
  • Previous clinical research experience is preferred.
  • Ability to identify the most pressing matters and work efficiently to complete tasks in a timely manner; flexibility is key.
  • Ability to take initial direction from another member of the research team in order to complete tasks independently.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills; friendly and outgoing.
  • Experience with neurodevelopmental disorder considered an asset
  • Experience with children/young adults with an intellectual disability. Ideally, the incumbent will have worked with this population for at least one year.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, as well as Google Drive.
  • Experience with REDCap and REMO applications are an asset.
  • Knowledge of teleconferencing systems.
  • UofA and/or AHS privacy training is an asset (training will be provided if necessary).
  • Experience with University of Alberta Ethics, Health Canada, and/or Data Safety Monitoring Board regulations is an asset.
  • Experience administering standardized tests is an asset (ideally to individuals with an intellectual disability).
