Postdoctoral Fellowship and PhD Studentship – Bergen, Norway

At the University of Bergen, Norway, a PhD studentship (3 years) in computational drug design and a postdoctoral fellowship in visual data science (3 years) are available within the interdisciplinary project “Escaping the Combinatorial Explosion: Expert-Enhanced Heuristic Navigation of Chemical Space (eHACS)”, which involves three UiB Departments (Chemistry, Biomedicine, and Informatics), the UiB Center for Data Science (CEDAS), and external partners such as Masaryk University (Czechia) and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

Computational methods have become essential in the search for new pharmaceuticals and other functional molecules. The goal of the eHACS project is to research and develop a new generation of molecular design methods, which more efficiently identify interesting candidate molecules by integrating knowledge guidance with machine learning models.

The computational methods will be complemented by newly developed interactive visual approaches to capitalize on the expert’s knowledge during the design process. To validate and challenge these new methods, they will be applied in the design of inhibitors for difficult-to-drug targets for treatment of infections and cancer. The computationally designed inhibitors will then be synthesized and experimentally tested by project partners.

The postdoctoral fellow and the PhD student will work at interface between informatics, chemistry, and biology, playing a crucial role in facilitating interdisciplinary communication and research. Whereas the postdoctoral fellow will focus on the new, interactive knowledge-guided visual data science methods, the PhD student will use these newly developed methods and be responsible for the computational de novo inhibitor design.
