PhD scholarships in Functional Materials and X-Ray Diffraction Imaging

Multiple PhD scholarships are available in the group for Functional Materials Imaging in the Section for Nanoscale Materials and Devices at DTU Physics. We are a young and energetic group with a vision to unravel fundamental structure-property relationships in functional materials via new and original characterization and analysis methods. We offer a positive, supportive and international research environment that values diversity, creativity, personal growth and impact.

The positions focus on:

  • Electromechanical interactions between ferroelectric/ferroelastic domain walls and lattice defects (e.g. dislocations and grain boundaries).
  • The accumulation and ordering of chemical defects in the presence of structural heterogeneity and external fields.
  • The emergence and dynamics of polar disorder in ferroelectric oxides.

The projects involve close collaboration with theoretical and experimental groups, both within DTU and international. Regular travel to international synchrotron facilities is anticipated.

Ideal candidates:

  • Are academically curious and think deeply and creatively
  • Communicate well in both written and spoken English
  • Are empathetic, kind, and enjoy working with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Take responsibility for the progress and quality of their projects.

We are committed to increasing diversity in science, and especially encourage applications from female, non-binary and LGBTQ+ candidates and other under-represented groups. All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in physics, chemistry, materials, computer science or a related technical discipline, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree (further details here). Ideally, they should have some experience in microscopy (light, electron, x-ray etc) and/or solid-state materials.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the candidates will be made by Associate Professor Hugh Simons.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. Candidates should be prepared to start no later than January 1st, 2021.

Application
Please submit your online application no later than 1 September 2020 (local time).

Apply online at www.career.dtu.dk.

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link “Apply online”, fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma
  • Excel sheet with translation of grades to the Danish grading system (see guidelines and Excel spreadsheet here)

Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master’s degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications and enclosures received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
