Master Scholarships in Aquaculture VLIR-UOS in Belgium

Aquaculture is defined as the production of aquatic plants and animals for human consumption. Under pressure from increasing world population on the one hand and stagnation or even declining fishing landings on the other, aquaculture is seen as the only option to meet the growing demand for fruit healthy and sustainable seafood. Commercial aquaculture is a relatively young, diverse and dynamic bio-industry with growth figures exceeding any other traditional primary production sector.

Modern aquaculture is a highly research-based bio-industry that requires constant innovation and highly qualified entrepreneurs. On the other hand, it is also a very diverse discipline with a wide range of species involved (plants, molluscs, crustaceans, fish), climates, environments (fresh water, brackish water, marine) and modes of exploitation (developing economies versus developed economies; subsistence versus commercial aquaculture).

The MSc in Aquaculture , created at the University of Ghent in 1991, offers a constantly updated program that balances a broad multidisciplinary approach with an in-depth training based on research. It prepares its students to assume leading roles in scientific research, as well as in policy development as aquaculture enterprises.

Learning outcomes

The Master of Science in Aquaculture prepares you to become a highly qualified and qualified expert capable of exploiting existing aquaculture potentials in a profitable and sustainable manner and of designing and implementing strategies for the future development of the aquaculture industry. Graduates from around the world will be able to act as key people in their own local environment, as the program strongly stimulates the transfer of knowledge between Europe and developing countries.

Structure

The program is designed according to a gradient of increasingly specialized and research-oriented courses over the four semesters of the two-year program.

  • Semester 1  : basic knowledge related to subjects such as biology, microbiology, aquatic ecology, statistics are consolidated, widened and deepened, in order to arrive at a homogeneous profile of the students.
  • Semester 2 & 3  : focus on specialized subjects related to aquaculture supported by the ARC’s expertise (especially in terms of production and applications of live food and larval microbiology). During this semester, students can follow an internship in one of our many partner institutes or companies around the world.
  • Semester 4:  dedicated to thesis work which is generally integrated into current research projects, thus offering the student a broader context of research and current applications.

Students advance their presentation skills, communication skills, and other generic skills through a variety of forms of instruction other than classroom instruction (for example, practical exercises; case study approaches, group work, laboratory work reports).
