Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Accelerator of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS)

The CSNS is the first pulsed neutron source facility in developing countries. Thus, it is expected to have positive effects in promoting the development of fundamental sciences and technology.
CSNS includes an 80 MeV H− linac, a 1.6 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS), a target station, and several instruments. The design beam power of CSNS is 100 kW, which has been achieved in February 2020. In the framework of the upgrade project (CSNS-II), the beam power will be increased to 500 kW.

In CSNS- II, the beam power will be upgraded from 100 to 500 kW while keeping the extraction energy of 1.6 GeV. The five times higher beam intensity results in a stronger space charge effect, which will cause larger betatron tune shift and can lead to beam loss. The space charge is the most important issue that limits the beam intensity of the CSNS RCS. Therefore, besides increasing the injection energy to 300 MeV by adding superconducting cavity in linac, the longitudinal distribution is also optimized to alleviate the heavy space charge effect and make beam loss more controllable.

Considering the new beam physics issues and engineering challenges in CSNS-II, research on the common physics and technology of high-power proton accelerators is conducted. This includes the study of high-power effects in proton accelerators, beam loss mechanisms and control methods, advanced high-gradient acceleration structures and high-frequency technology, high-power proton ion source technology, laser stripping technology, etc.

The Dongguan Campus also plans to build a medium-energy fourth-generation diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation light source (SAPS, Southern Advanced Photon Source) next to the CSNS, providing another powerful characterization technique to both domestic and foreign users. The Dongguan Campus has played and will remain a unique role at Southern China, with its advances in accelerator technology, neutron science, and X-ray science, boosting the technological innovation and development not just for the Greater Bay Area, but for China as well Regarding SAPS, forward-looking and systematic research is carried out on the physics and technology of the accelerator. Research work is conducted on the injector physics scheme for a full-energy linear accelerator based on the C-band acceleration structure. Additionally, key technological research is conducted on the C-band photocathode electron gun, superconducting damping wigglers, high-voltage nanosecond narrow pulse power supplies for rotating magnetic non-linear transfer lines, longitudinal on-axis accumulation injection, and coherent attosecond bunch validation work.
