About NORCE Environment NORCE Environment department, located in Bergen, Stavanger and Tromsø, is headed by Hans Kleivdal, Executive Vice President. The department covers research on environmental research, ecosystems, aquaculture, biotechnology and circular bioeconomy for which the seven Research Group Leaders report to the Executive Vice President. There is now a vacant position as a Research Group Leader for the industrial biotechnology group.

Industrial Biotechnology Group The research group works within several fields of industrial biotechnology research and application area including food- and feed industry, aquaculture and oil & gas, on projects spanning from basic R&D (TRL1-2) to applied industry projects (TRL7-8). The group consists of 10 researchers and engineers working mainly on fermentation and bioproduction from waste streams and use of alternative feedstocks (including gaseous feedstocks such as methane, CO2, H2…), process development and optimization, modelling and scale up, downstream processes and bioactive compounds.

The group has a broad bio-based expertise within microbiology, molecular biology, proteomics, biochemistry and analytical chemistry, biotechnology and bioprocess engineering.

Research facilities are concentrated in the Stavanger region, at Ullandhaug, Mekjarvik and Risavika, and include a state of the art fermentation facility with access to up to 1500L reactors.

The project portfolio of the group includes hosting of the National Bioprocess and Fermentation Centre (Infrastructure), and participation in the SFI Centre for Industrial Biotechnology (Centres for Research-based Innovation). A Katapult Centre application for enabling industrial biotechnology value chains is also in development together with industry partners.

Research Group Leader position We seek a candidate with a documented solid academic background in biotechnology and experience from research or the industry sector, preferably within fermentation, bioprocess development or related fields. Furthermore, the candidate should have a documented experience as a personnel leader and a clear interest for commercial development. To be a Research Group Leader in NORCE requires a strong scientific and commercial insight as well as good leadership skills. The right candidate will have good opportunities for professional development.

Research Group Leader position is a permanent researcher position. Research Group Leader position carries additional management responsibility. For the management role, there is a salary supplement. In the event that the management role ceases, the position reverts to researcher position.

The research component in the position may vary depending on the size of the group and on agreement with department’s Executive Vice President.

Responsibilities and work tasks Research Group Leader is in charge of the administrative and scientific management of the group, including strategic responsibility for developing the research field and new research ideas. Research Group Leader also has personnel responsibility for employees in the research group, and responsibility for the professional development of the individual and the group as a whole. Furthermore, Research Group Leader carries the health and safety responsibility for research activities in the group. Research Group Leader will report on given key indicators for the activity, including responsibility for the economic results in the group’s project portfolio.

Research Group Leader will be part of the department’s management team and will play an important role in the strategic development of the department, participating in design of the department’s research strategy, project acquisition, facilitating applications across research groups and departments in NORCE, and contributing to public-oriented and strategic research dissemination from the department.

Research Group Leader will be responsible for facilitating good cooperation and dialogue within the research group and across the research groups in the department and in NORCE, also across locations. Research Group Leader should ensure a good flow of information between the department’s management team and the research group.

Required competence We seek an inspiring and motivating research leader with excellent teambuilding and collaborative skills.

Applicants must document:

Academic or industrial background in biotechnology, preferably within fermentation, bioprocess development or related fields. Experience in research project generation, also in collaboration with industry partners. Experience in personnel leadership Excellent communication, marketing and networking skills. Research Group Leader will be a driving force in further development of the department and NORCE, and ability for teamwork and creating initiatives and cooperation in the research group and between the research groups will be considered crucial.

Salary supplement for Research Group Leader position is formed upon agreement, based on qualifications and experience.
