We are now looking for a visionary Research Team Leader for our ‘Force metrology’ team.

In this position, you have a chance to play a key role in measurement science and in developing new ways to ensure reliability of measurements.  As a Research Team Leader, you are responsible for leading your team and its project portfolio to create increasing impact for customers and stakeholders. You also contribute to research projects yourself.

The “Force metrology” team is focusing on reliable and internationally recognized force, torque and liquid flow measurements. The team is located in the VTT research area ‘National Metrology Institute VTT MIKES’, and is working in close collaboration with our other research teams in the area. The team maintains and develops relevant SI unit realisations, provides calibration services and develops new solutions for reliable measurements. The force metrology team works in close collaboration with customers and metrology organisations worldwide. It helps customers to establish SI traceability of their measurements and to perform measurements with internationally proven reliability. The job is located in Kajaani, Finland.

Your responsibilities as Research Team Leader:

Visionary leadership of the team. You will be the spokesperson for the research topic and take an active role in promoting its visibility.

Relevance and ambition of the team’s project portfolio and impactful collaboration with companies, policy makers and other stakeholders.

Upscaling the size and scope of projects, developing and broaden the portfolio of provided services, especially in area of measuring and calibration technology development.

Working as one of the key contributors of the area and participating in relevant research projects by yourself.

As member of the research area’s leadership team, you find ways to combine competences and foster internal-/external collaboration to ensure wider impact.

This is a line manager role, so you are responsible for coaching the team and team members’ performance as an inspirational leader. Employee wellbeing, recruitment and team’s competence development are your key priority.

Who we are looking for:

Several years of working experience in recent sensor technologies and developing measurement solutions. Experience on fluid dynamics or mechanical engineering is appreciated, as the core expertise of the team is focused on measurements related to these domains.

Proven skills in research and development for industrial applications with a track record in driving excellence and impact in the area of research.

Experience in working in a senior R&D role in an industrial company on a relevant area (i.e. measurement technology, fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering or sensor technology) is considered an asset.

Experience in industrial collaboration with customer / stakeholder networks is considered as an asset.

Work history in managing a team or leading project teams.

As a leader, you want to create positive drive and get people excited by coaching and setting ambitious targets together with the team. Strong interpersonal skills are mandatory in the position.

You have a Master of Science degree in a relevant field or equivalent science experience. A doctoral degree is considered as an asset.

Good communication skills and ability to build high value research collaboration in the area. You should be proficient in English language.
