Junior researcher in business analytics with a focus on multiple-criteria evaluation methods and their application, Finland

The LUT School of Business and Management is looking for a junior researcher in business analytics with a focus on multiple-criteria evaluation methods and their application to strengthen its finance and business analytics team. Specifically, we are looking for a curious mind who is aiming for an academic career and is passionate about methods for managerial and organizational decision support and their practical use in solving complex real-life problems and interested in learning about the design of new methods for this purpose. Position will complement the competences of our existing research group focusing on topics of strategic finance and business analytics.

Job requirements

You must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. business analytics, computer science, applied mathematics) and ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within their normative duration (i.e. four years).  Fluency in English (both written and oral) is needed in the position.

An employment contract can be concluded only if the candidate obtains the right to pursue postgraduate studies at LUT University. The position will be available initially for one year and can be extended by three years, provided that LUT deems the studies and research to have progressed satisfactorily.

The ideal candidate for the position

  • is interested in writing a dissertation on either of the following areas:
  • Methods for multiple-criteria and multi-expert evaluation
  • Absolute-type evaluation methods and their use (MCDM, multi-expert setting)
  • Methods for decision-making and evaluation under risk and/or uncertainty
  • Decision-support methods for business and management (incl. lossless representation of social science/survey data,
  • has basic knowledge of multiple-criteria decision-making and evaluation, operational research and quantitative research methods, fuzzy sets and fuzzy models and ability to use software relevant for the implementation and validation of the methods (Matlab, Python, R, etc.)
  • has a Master’s degree with excellent grades.

  • Encouraging and supportive supervision by and research collaboration with Associate Professor Jan Stoklasa and Professor Pasi Luukka (LUT).

The work will start in March-April (negotiable) with a six-month trial period. The job is based in Lappeenranta, Finland. The typical gross annual starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 30 400 euros (plus a holiday bonus in accordance with the collective agreement).

  3. Your Master’s thesis
  4. A motivation letter: an account of your merits and activities of significance to the vacancy (max. 2 pages)
  5. A tentative dissertation research plan (5–10 pages) related to one of the dissertation research areas above. The research plan should be organised as follows:
    • 1. Introduction: research problem or gap, importance of the topic, research questions, etc.
    • 2. Theory/literature review: theoretical framework for your dissertation or relevant literature streams related to your topic
    • 3. Methodology: possible methods to explore and investigate the topic
    • 4. Results and contributions: expected results and contributions to theory and practice.
