Lecturer in Global Music

The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) is now recruiting

LECTURER IN GLOBAL MUSIC

for a 50 % employment with fixed-term period of 2 years, starting from 1 August 2020.

The Lecturer will work in the Department of Global Music in Helsinki, one of the six departments of the Faculty of Music Education, Jazz and Folk Music.

Overview of the Global Music Department

The Global Music Department embraces cultural diversity and inclusivity, aiming to educate flexible, innovative musicians and pedagogues with a strong ethical understanding of intercultural dialogue, collaboration, community engagement and global responsibility. Students develop the ability to perform, create, communicate, collaborate, facilitate, carry out research and lead in a wide range of musical, cultural and socially engaged contexts.

The term ‘Global Music’ is viewed in the broadest sense, incorporating multi-disciplinary and collaborative inter-arts approaches alongside traditional and contemporary forms of artistic expression. With intercultural collaboration at the heart of the programme, applicants are welcome from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds. Musicians may apply on any main instrument, voice or composition, including traditional instruments from around the world. Students are supported in the development and deepening of their own unique artistic identity as an integral part of the studies. More information about the department can be found via the Uniarts Helsinki website.

Tasks of the Lecturer

As a 50% lecturer in global music, your tasks will include teaching core curriculum courses connected to your particular areas of expertise at bachelor and master’s levels. You may also be asked to teach individual lessons on your main instrument, voice or composition as part of the lectureship. As lecturer, you will work closely with the Head of Department and other teachers, actively contributing to the further development and wellbeing of the Global Music Department. You are also encouraged to actively contribute to building networks between the department and the outside world through artistic activity, pedagogical projects and research. Other tasks include participating in teachers’ meetings and serving as a jury member for a number of exam concerts and auditions each year.

In a 50% position, the lecturer’s total annual working hours amounts to 812 h, including 227 hours of contact teaching. Managing the tasks of the position successfully requires regular presence during the teaching season.

Selection criteria

Key selection criteria include:

  • Level of instrumental / vocal / performance skills and quality of expression
  • Presence of a unique core artistic identity
  • Level of awareness and understanding of the intercultural / transcultural environment
  • Level of pedagogical skills appropriate to the educational context of the global music degree
  • Previous experience relevant to the educational context of the global music degree
  • Flexible musicianship and skills in intercultural dialogue, collaboration and facilitation
  • Previous career merits as a musician/pedagogue working in diverse, collaborative, intercultural musical environments.

We expect you to have a suitable master’s degree. Strong experience acquired from practical work along with particular artistic merits may, however, compensate for a missing degree. Pedagogical studies or otherwise proven pedagogical qualifications, a suitable doctoral degree, proof of teaching and curriculum development, expert tasks as well as positions of trust requiring collaboration and organisational skills, along with international networking and public affairs will be considered advantages.

Based on applications and other available information, the university will call the strongest applicants for a separate demonstration of proficiency, where the candidates will be evaluated by their commitment, aptitude and competence in relation to the post of lecturer and the demands of the working environment. The demonstration of proficiency will be arranged in Helsinki on Monday, 27 April 2020. The demonstration will include a performance and teaching sample and an interview as follows:

  1. Performance (10 min). You are asked to perform music of your choice, which demonstrates your own tradition, musical background or unique form of musical expression. This may include traditional and/or contemporary pieces, your own compositions and / or an improvisation. The performance may be solo or with accompanying musicians. You must provide your own accompanying musicians if required.
  2. Teaching Sample (20 min). You will work with the students provided for you in order to demonstrate your pedagogical approaches to working with students in the Global Music context. The content of the teaching demonstration is up to you, but should give a clear indication of your unique pedagogical approaches within the structure of a 20-minute time limit.
  3. Interview (15 min)
