The aim of the proposed research project is to analyse the socio-demographic behaviour of 50-74 year olds by gender and to compare it to other age groups, particularly adults. Do the differences observed between men and women during adult life remain or diminish after the age of 50? The 50-74 age group is of particular interest. There may be a change in the behaviours acquired during working life, the adoption of new behaviours or the maintenance of habitual behaviours. This research will analyse how the differences in behaviour between men and women evolve between the ages of 50 and 74. It will seek to highlight sex and gender effects and age and generation effects. The project will focus on the French case but a comparative dimension with other countries (Europe, Canada) will be welcome.
The behaviours studied will be of several kinds: suicide mortality, divorce applications, behaviour towards alcohol, tobacco, gambling, residential mobility, associative behaviour, political behaviour (membership of political parties, electoral participation), etc.
The methodological approach will be twofold: a cross-sectional analysis of the phenomena completed by a longitudinal analysis within generations.
The data used will come from several sources: the major national surveys carried out by INED and INSEE, and administrative statistics. These data will be used and analysed quantitatively and rigorously according to sex and age, in order to measure the differences and changes with advancing age.
