The Applied Mathematics Research Group in the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis at the School of Science is seeking for a

Doctoral Candidate in Applied Mathematics

to work under the supervision of Prof. Vanni Noferini. Specifically, the candidate will work on the theme of “Non-backtracking centrality measures and beyond’’. Areas of mathematics that are relevant include matrix theory, complex network analysis, numerical linear algebra, graph theory and statistics. The main goal of the project is to perform further research on some recently introduced centrality measures based on the combinatorics of non-backtracking and more generally non-cycling walks in a graph. The project will include the study of potential applications of centrality measures to various disciplines such as biology, economics and finance, and the candidate is expected to also coordinate with international researchers in these disciplines.

The candidate will start in September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, or equivalent on a related discipline
  • Good command of English
  • Strong drive towards excellence in science and technology at the highest international level

Some experience on the areas of mathematics most relevant to the project is appreciated; an interest in one or more of the scientific disciplines where potential applications can arise is also valued. Knowledge of at least one scientific computing programming language, e.g., MATLAB or R, is highly desirable.

The Doctoral Program at Aalto University is intended for the candidates of excellent academic background motivated in pursuing a full-time doctoral program and producing cutting-edge research of the highest international level. Salary and duration

The approximate timescale to complete the doctoral degree is 4 years. We seek to fill these positions as soon as possible but later starting dates are possible. The standard salary level starts at 2 537.34 EUR/month. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
