We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student in environmental sciences, with particular interest in biodiversity, community ecology and global change biology.
Worldwide, glaciers are retreating at historically unprecedented rates. As glaciers retreat, new terrains are exposed to colonization by living organisms. Nonetheless, the consequences of glacier retreat on biodiversity and ecological networks remain overlooked.
A PhD position is open in the Biodiversity Change group of Gianalberto Losapio at University of Lausanne as part of an SNSF Ambizione project looking at the effects of glacier retreat on biological communities. In particular, the candidate will study species interactions and ecosystem functioning in front of retreating glaciers across the Swiss Alps. The overarching goal of this project is to predict the fate of biodiversity and to develop strategies for anticipating the impacts of glacier retreat on Alpine ecosystems.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and independent person with a passion for science and nature. Talented students with a degree in environmental sciences, ecology, plant sciences or related fields interested in taking an integrative approach are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to have good fieldwork and quantitative skills and be keen to learn experimental and computational techniques. A high level of written and spoken English proficiency is required.
You will develop your research project while working in a multicultural, diverse, collaborative, and dynamic environment. We provide great opportunities for academic and professional training as well as acquisition of transversal skills. We offer stimuli for developing critical thinking and to become an independent scientist. You will receive individualized attention and will have many opportunities to develop close collegial relationships with fellow students and different faculties.
Salary and benefits are internationally highly competitive. The candidate will be supervised by Gianalberto Losapio and Antoine Guisan (co-director). Within an international research program, the PhD student can opt for a dual degree with University of Milan (Italy).
Please send your application as a single pdf file including: (1) a motivation letter describing your reasons for pursuing a PhD with us, your research interests, your preparation for doing research in environmental sciences, why we would be a good fit for your career plans and other aspects of your background (up to 500 words); (2) your curriculum vitae with extracurricular activities, internships, publications, conferences, awards, services; (3) thesis summary or summary of any meaningful research project you’ve been involved in (up to 500 words); (4) copy of undergraduate and graduate degree certificates and academic transcripts of record; (5) the names and contact details of at least two referees.
