Participants have the possibility to choose any subject related to the assigned subject. The essay must be a legal article. The Academy will award  two  prizes, one for the best article in English and the other for the best article in Spanish.

  • The honorary jury’s decision will be announced on April 2, 2020 on the Academy’s website. Winners will also be informed immediately to arrange for travel to Washington DC. The decision of the jury of honor will be final and will not admit any appeal.

Eligibility conditions (criteria)

  • Candidates for the award must have a law degree   and have demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.
  • Past winners cannot submit essays in future competitions.
  • Authors should keep copies of all their source documents; this means having photocopies of all pages used from a particular source.
  • Authors should not include their names or any identifying information in their essays.
  • Essays will only be accepted in Word format
  •   each participant must also include a curriculum vitae of no more than three pages explaining the author’s experience or interest in human rights issues. Please submit the CV in a separate file from your article.
  •  Any attached material other than a CV will not be accepted. Do not include a bibliography, list of websites or any other additional material. These will be immediately rejected and not taken into account.

The test must meet the following requirements  :

  • No more than 35 pages
  • The text of the essay is size 12, Times New Roman font, double-spaced
  • The footnotes are size 10, Times New Roman font, single spaced
  • 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins all around
  • The page is in letter format (8.5 x 11 inches / 21.59 x 27.94 cm)
  • There is no information identifying the author in the essay.
