Offer Description

Rector

of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wroclaw

announces an open competition for the POST DOC position - assistant professor in the group of research associates

in the Department of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Seeding

within the NCN SONATA 14 2018/31/D/NZ9/01452 project entitled:

"Variable electromagnetic field as a factor regulating gene expression in plants on the example of flax ".

Description of tasks in the position:

  • analysis of transient transformants and transgenic plants (especially analyses of reporter system activity levels and oxidative stress analyses);
  • subjecting plants to stress factors (biotic and abiotic) and subsequent analysis of these plants (including RT-PCR gene expression, free radical levels, reporter system activity, biochemical analyses);
  • preparation of gene constructs for plant transformation;
  • planning of experiments; analysis of results; interpretation, presentation and publication of research results.

Project Description:

The project is concerned with investigating how alternating low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) modifies gene expression in plants. In everyday life, ELF-EMF occurs around all electrical and electronic devices or power lines. Many organisms, due to their ability to move around, are locally and temporarily exposed to electromagnetic fields, while plants are not. This is particularly true for crop plants growing in the vicinity of electric power transmission networks or catenary networks (which just generate ELF-EMF). Since there are reports in the literature about the negative effects of electromagnetic fields on plant growth and development, research in this area seems justified. However, the results obtained so far mainly describe the effects of EMF on plant growth, development and physiology, while the mechanism of electromagnetic field action on plants itself remains unexplained.

The project is concerned with investigating how a low-frequency alternating electromagnetic field (EMF) modifies gene expression in plants. Identifying motifs in plant gene promoters that are elements of the plant response to EMF is the main goal of this proposal. The knowledge gained from this project will contribute to a better understanding of the regulation of gene expression in plants and a better understanding of potential modulators of plant growth and development.

Requirements for candidates:

  • has a doctoral degree in biological sciences preferentially in biochemistry, biotechnology or molecular biology;
  • demonstrates knowledge of techniques for working with plant in vitro cultures;
  • is proficient in analytical techniques:
  •         - in biochemistry (including techniques for working with nucleic acids), plant molecular biology (knowledge of transgenesis techniques, working with a reporter system);

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an important tool for sustainable decision-making. In the last decades, there was large progress in terms of the number, complexity and accuracy of impact categories covered; especially for those related to ecosystem quality.  However, there are still some gaps. This includes impacts of noise and artificial lights on biodiversity that are not yet covered on a global level. About the job

With the European Union setting the ambitious goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, and many other countries embracing similar policies to decarbonize electricity, supporting a more sustainable society, there is a significant need for technological advances and increased competitiveness to drive the growth of offshore renewable energies, and energy storage in the coming years.

Within this context, this PhD project will focus specifically on investigating how to ensure that large amounts of offshore wind energy can be integrated into the electric grid without jeopardizing its stability due to resonance phenomena and harmonic interactions.

The PhD Candidate will be employed at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the workplace will be in Trondheim, Norway, but the PhD-project is of both academic and industrial relevance, and it will therefore be developed in close cooperation between NTNU in Trondheim and the company Petronas, which is a global Malaysian energy group.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The objective of the PhD education is to qualify for scientific research of high international standard. The PhD education has a nominal duration of three years of full-time study and includes required coursework or similar academic training comprising a minimum of 30 credits. The most important component of the PhD education is an independent scientific research project carried out under academic supervision, which results in the PhD thesis. The PhD degree is conferred based on these two elements and the doctoral examination, which consists of a trial lecture and a public defense of the scientific thesis.

In the scientific research project, the PhD candidate will investigate the risks in terms of harmonic resonances/harmonic instability which may arise from the increase in power level and distance from shore of wind turbines (as well as PV farms) with ac collection systems, and how they depend on the operating conditions of the farm.

Among the specific objectives of the PhD project there are:

  • To identify a realistic use-case (baseline case) for a large offshore wind park (or possibly PV plant) with ac collection grid.
  • To model the identified test case in MATLAB or DIgSILENT to replicate the problem, in such a way that it is possible to parameterize turbine type (Type 3 or Type 4) or PV, network with varying grid strength, short circuit ratio, etc.
  • Validate various operating modes of the wind farm (e.g., constant PQ mode, voltage/frequency support mode or grid forming mode) against the baseline test case.
  • Capture harmonic resonance and stability issues depending on number of wind turbines (or PV panels) in operation, wind speed (or solar irradiation), cable length, converter topology and control, etc. both theoretically and by simulations.
  • Identify critical parameters for resonance/instability.

Required selection criteria

Applicants must hold an M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) within electrical engineering with a specialization or solid competence in dynamic modeling of electric power systems.

  • Good knowledge of the basics of power electronics and power systems is needed.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by autumn 2023.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program.
  • Applicants must have good English language skills, written and spoken. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland must provide preliminary documentation of English language proficiency in terms of an approved test. The following tests can be used: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
    • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
    • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
    • CAE/CPE: grade B or A

Further assessment of both written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently will be conducted in the continued selection process and during any interviews for the shortlisted applicants.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with offshore renewable energy systems will be an advantage.

Personal characteristics

  • Communicates information with clarity and ease, both orally and in writing.
  • Self-driven with a strong ability to work both independently, and in cooperation with others when required.
  • Shares information and expertise to achieve the desired results.
  • Structured, targeted and solution-oriented.

A good working environment is important to us at the Department of Electric Energy. Our working environment is characterized by an informal and friendly tone and good cooperation between employees. We therefore want you to be a person who

  • works from campus and participates in joint activities such as lunch, and takes the initiative in academic and social activities in the scholarship group
  • participates in professional discussions with colleagues
  • has a friendly and positive attitude

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastián (Basque Country, Spain) is offering a 4-year funded PhD opportunity.

Job description: The PhD student will work on the SIGNifica projectfunded by the Spanish Ministry of  Science and Innovation, examining the lexical semantics of Spanish Sign Language (LSE). This project aims to collect free association norms for LSE to map the semantics of the LSE lexicon. The data will be used to create a network that characterizes how different meanings are interconnected, and to quantify semantic properties such as entropy, semantic neighborhood density and clustering. In addition, we will use this dataset to investigate how the intersection of form (phonology) and meaning (semantics) gives rise to systematicity and iconicity in the sign lexicon. This project involves a collaboration with the ASL-LEX developers (at Boston University and SDSU, California) and will involve cross-linguistic comparisons between LSE, ASL, Spanish and English. This project continues a broader line of research into the lexicon of Spanish Sign Language, an understudied language, and will provide valuable insight into the way that modality shapes how language is structured and processed by the human mind.

The selected candidate will play a central role in the project and will be involved in collecting and curating a large dataset of semantic associations from deaf LSE signers (via an on-line platform), exploiting existing language resources and performing computational analysis using network theory. The candidate will develop advanced technical and analytical skills and will also have the opportunity to develop experiments into sign language/LSE processing under the supervision and guidance of the PI. We encourage applications from Deaf candidates.

PI and research group: The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Brendan Costello (b.costello@bcbl.eu), and will form part of the sign language and deafness research team, which has developed resources such as a lexical database of LSE and a motion capture system for characterizing sign production. We use these resources together with a variety of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to investigate how the sign language lexicon is structured and represented cognitively. Sign languages offer unique insight into how language can operate in a different modality and, more generally, how modality affects language structure and processing. This work contributes to understanding the cognitive foundations of deaf individuals’ language use and development, and also to broadening our understanding of language per se. The team is part of the Neurobiology of Language research group led by Prof. Manuel Carreiras (m.carreiras@bcbl.eu).
