This programme aims to strengthen the capacity of professionals and decision makers in the water sector to improve water management in the MENA region countries to better cope with the challenges of stressed water resources including under the impacts of climate change.

IHE Delft will provide water professionals from seven MENA countries (Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Yemen) and Sudan with MSc level education in Delft on relevant topics for MENA region water scarcity. Fellowships will be awarded to applicants with admission to the MSc programme in Water and Sustainable Development, starting in November 2022.

The MSc programme includes field based research to be conducted preferably on specific problems in the home country of the participants. The research topics will be selected within specified themes addressing water scarcity challenges in the region.

To increase the relevance for MENA specific water scarcity challenges, and to stimulate cooperation between professionals from different disciplines offered by IHE Delft, the students will participate in a number of additional MENA-dedicated activities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates are a national of and work and/or live in one of the eligible MENA countries (see below)
  • Academic admission (‘admission requirements: www.un-ihe.org/application-and-admission) to the MSc programme in Water and Sustainable Development 2022
  • Application for admission submitted before 1 May 2022
  • ‘Letter of motivation and vision on Water Scarcity in the Applicant’s Country submitted at application for admission (template)

MENA-CD fellowships may be provided to candidates who are a national of, and work and/or live in, one of the following MENA countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Yemen.

I was always interested in the water sector, especially after the start of the Yemeni Civil War, during which the basic infrastructure was heavily damaged, increasing environmental contamination, which consequently put the environment at risk. I thought that this is an issue I can do something about and help my country with.

How to apply

Please submit an online application for admission through the website of IHE Delft. When you are completing your application, you will be requested to answer 5 motivation questions. In order to increase your chances for scholarship, you are requested to answer these questions as detailed as possible and focus in your motivation on your vision on Water Scarcity in your country. The questions you need to answer when completing your application are the following:

Selection criteria

  • Academic Qualifications
  • Quality of the motivation
  • Recommendation letters
  • Gender (females will be prioritised)
  • Distribution among countries (when a final list of prospective participants is available, IHE Delft will assign fellowships as equitably/equally as possible between the countries eligible for the fellowships).

Financial info

The fellowship includes: full tuition fee, health insurance, cost of visa/residence permit for the Netherlands and a monthly allowance of EUR 970 per month from the start till the end date to the programme (not exceeding 12 months)
