Location:  Budapest

The Central European University (in Vienna) and the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB), located at the Budapest site of the Central European University (CEU), is seeking to fill a postdoctoral researcher position full or part-time for a two-year period (from October 2023 to October 2025) in the framework of an ERC Synergy Grant financed research project, Taming the European Leviathan.

The Leviathan Project has four partner institutions: Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Sofia), University of Hamburg, and CEU (Budapest–Vienna). The project challenges existing interpretations of European identity and aims to understand Europe beyond an East-West-dichotomy by focusing on the history of medicine and health policy.

Duties and responsibilities:

We are looking for a research associate who would work on the history of medicine and health policy with a focus on specific topics, such as the legacy of eugenic theory and practices in post-war Europe, psychiatric care, transplantation, blood transfusion, vaccination. (Other research areas could be also included within the framework of the project). Our team is looking at the bioethical and legal component of these areas.

Qualifications:

The candidate must hold a university graduate degree (PhD or SJD) in the disciplines of history, gender studies, bioethics, anthropology, or legal studies (SJD, PhD) and must be fluent in English and in one or more other European languages. We also expect regular presence at the CELAB offices and active participation in organizing workshops, conferences, and other events. We are looking for a person who is ambitious, independent, and solution-oriented, and who is enthusiastic about the exchange of ideas, enjoys teamwork and has an exceptional ability to write up research findings.

What we offer

This two-year position offers participation in a stimulating intellectual project with numerous other researchers, provides an opportunity for establishing and expanding academic contacts internationally, and allows the utilization of an excellent infrastructure in Budapest and in Vienna. While CELAB is located on the site of the CUE in Budapest, it cooperates regularly with university departments at CEU Vienna.

How to apply

Please send your application with informative documents (CV, list of publications, a sample of your academic work) and a research outline (up to 2,000 words) to advert047@ceu.edu by July 20, 2023. Interviews in the selection process are expected to take place at the beginning of September 2023.

Questions can be addressed to Project Manager: Krisztina Zsukotynszky (zsukoty@ceu.edu).
