The activities at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research-Hyderabad (TIFRH) are poised to expand significantly on its ~200 acre campus, with full-fledged infrastructure for research labs, along with other facilities for researchers and staff. By 2027, the campus will have ~650,000 sq feet of laboratory, classroom and discussion spaces, and will eventually host a total of ~600 researchers, students, and staff. Along with growth in the existing areas of research and education in basic sciences, the institute seeks to add newer activities to its programme. TIFRH is looking to initiate activities in Computational and Mathematical Sciences in general, and particularly in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The goals are two-fold: (i) fundamental research, exploring theoretical underpinnings, in order to address challenging and emerging problems, (ii) innovations leading to data driven tools and techniques to tackle large-scale fundamental and practical problems. Some of the problems in the practical domain include climate and weather modelling, healthcare, economics and transportation systems, etc.
The institute invites researchers working actively at the forefronts of these fields and wishing to make innovative and groundbreaking contributions, especially in the areas of computational statistics, machine learning and related areas. Expertise in areas such as probability, statistics, optimization, and operations research, and an emphasis on conceptual focus would be preferred. The other activities in basic sciences at the institute will provide opportunities for collaboration on outstanding scientific problems from a data science perspective. The institute also welcomes applicants with an orientation in data sciences with domain expertise in biological, chemical and physical sciences. The proximity of the institute to governmental, defense and academic institutions, and the vibrant industrial base in the financial and IT sectors in the city affords a wide range of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. Researchers who desire to tap into this potential and through their research, support the building of large-scale applications are strongly encouraged to apply. The institute encourages faculty interactions with the industry, government and other academic institutions.
