Introduction   Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest is Ireland’s third technological        university and home to 15,000 students and a staff complement of approximately 2,000 people, full-time and part-time, across six campuses in Athlone, Limerick, Thurles, Clonmel, and Ennis.

TUS has a significant research track record eXtended Reality, Multisensory Multimedia and Quality of Experience within the Faculty of Engineering & Informatics in the TUS midlands campus. The team now includes more than 20 MSc/PhD students in addition to postdoctoral researchers and Faculty from Dept. of Computer & Software Engineering. We are an interdisciplinary research team regularly collaborating with domain experts from health, education, tourism, smart manufacturing, cultural and creative sectors.  Researchers in TUS play key roles in the Science Foundation Ireland Adapt Centre for AI enabled Digital Content Technologies, the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing as well as the Enterprise Ireland COMAND Technology Gateway. Since 2022, the team is coordinating the Horizon Europe TRANSMIXR project (https://transmixr.eu/).

The Role The Senior Virtual Production Broadcast Specialist will join the TRANSMIXR team at TUS.  TRANSMIXR is a newly funded Horizon Europe project, a consortium of 8 representatives from the creative and cultural sector and 12 leading industrial and academic partners, combining the necessary interdisciplinary skill sets and domain expertise to create a range of human-centric tools for remote content production and consumption via social virtual reality.  The project’s TransMIXR platform will provide (i) a distributed XR Creation Environment that supports remote collaboration practices, and (ii) XR Media Experience Environment for the delivery and consumption of highly evocative and highly-social immersive media experiences.  The ground-breaking AI techniques for the comprehension and processing of complex media content will enable the reuse of heterogeneous assets across immersive content delivery platforms.  Using the Living Labs methodology, TransMIXR will develop and evaluate four pilots that bring the vision of future media experiences to life in three CCS domains: (i) news media & broadcasting, (ii) performing arts, and (iii) cultural heritage. The project will build on a track record of interdisciplinary research in the group developed for more than 10 years.
Qualifications/Experience Essential:

  • Hands on design and technical development experience of next generation real-time content creation, AR, LED Video Walls.
  • Experience in Virtual Production.
  • Experience of planning, organising, and executing novel XR solutions for broadcast.
  • Disseminate the outcomes of the research in appropriate national and international conferences, events and policy forums.
  • Track record of leading successful research funding.
  • Proven track-record of leading R&D innovation projects.
Duties We are looking for a senior and experienced professional with expertise in:

  • Virtual content production and real-time graphics design for AR, MR, XR
  • Real-time broadcast systems, e.g. VizRT
  • Deep knowledge of cutting-edge technology and trends in the media and broadcasting industry

The successful candidate will contribute to the project by helping to design novel XR solutions for broadcasting media. By building upon existing ideas and linking them to their own experience in the media industry they will generate novel unique concepts and solutions.

  • Supervision of researchers as designated by Principal Investigator.
  • Carry out other duties that may arise which may be assigned by their line manager or designate
Hours 15 hours per week excluding rest breaks
Annual Leave 30 Days per annum pro-rata
Salary Level 4 SFI Salary Scale currently €73,486 – €78,863 (pro-rata)

The starting pay on appointment is dependent on funding availability and experience.

The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
