Position Description

The Department of Social Work at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), invites applications for a temporary full-time 12-month Visiting Faculty to serve as the Chair of the Master of Social Work Program with the appointment starting in Summer 2023. The position includes overseeing one state and one local grant as a PI.

The Position

The College of Health, Human Services and Nursing at California State Dominguez Hills seeks an individual to serve as the interim Chair of the Master of Social Work Program. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar in social work or related field (e.g. track record of publications and/or grant funding) with demonstrated academic leadership skills and vision to lead a department that emphasizes research excellence, quality graduate instruction, and community engagement. The department is seeking someone that will participate in transparent academic governance at the department, college and university levels, and foster faculty development through mentorship, collaboration and training opportunities.

Responsibilities

Manage and supervise faculty and staff, and administer and evaluate academic programs, budget, and student advisement. Engage in social work professional achievement. Create and maintain an academic and collegial environment that fosters excellence in teaching, research, and community service. Provide guidance in both curriculum and faculty development. Secure and manage external funding. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, including age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic experience.
  • Earned doctorate in Social Work/Social Welfare or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education (e.g. Ph.D, DSW)
  • A record of scholarly accomplishments, including publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, invited contributions to publications, invitations to present at national conferences, and successful external funding awards
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development
  • A minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated experience in an administrative position with demonstrated organization and resource management skills in a university setting
  • Demonstrated academic leadership
  • Active participation in professional organizations
  • Experience and knowledge about CSWE accreditation standards as they apply to graduate programs
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Effective conflict resolution skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience securing and managing grants
  • Leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, scholarship, curriculum development, administrative experience, or professional activities in social work.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to anti-racist or anti-oppression social work education.

Department of Social Work

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is intentionally designed to address the diverse social service needs, issues and problems particular to a large metropolitan area such as Los Angeles County. Building on the diversity of the various ethnic groups and cultures residing in the area, the program prepares social work students for community-centered, contextually competent social work practice, inclusive of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, class, sexual orientation, gender and other aspects of identity. The effects of bias, prejudice and institutionalized racism are examined so that students understand how these issues can affect social work practice, policy development and program implementation. Students learn a variety of perspectives and ways of identifying strategies and interventions for addressing these concerns and other problems in social work practice with individuals, families and communities.

The Department of Social Work promotes a psychosocial, ecological and cross-cultural approach to social work practice with Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality serving as the theoretical framework for contextually competent practice. The curriculum is developed and organized in a coherent and integrated manner, consistent with program goals and objectives. CSUDH, The Department of Social work offers one concentration: Social Work Practice in Communities (SWPC) and three specializations: Children, Youth and Families, Community Mental Health and Community Capacity Building.

Additional Information

The Visiting Faculty (12-month) classification salary range is $5,168 to $15,864 per month (12 monthly payments per year); The anticipated hiring salary is $10,000 to $11,430. This position will be commensurate with experience and current CSUDH faculty salaries in the Department of Social Work. Faculty salaries are subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
