The Centre for Molecular Biophysics (CBM) of CNRS is seeking outstanding junior candidates to strengthen or establish world-class research programs in CBM research areas, including:

CBM (~150 scientists and supporting staff) conducts research at the interface of chemistry, biology, and biophysics with the objective of understanding the structure, dynamics, and interactions of biomacromolecules from the atomic level to the cell and organism. This approach entails searching for the molecular mechanisms of biological functions and dysfunctions that trigger the development of diseases. A strong focus is also put on novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, as well as on the development of broadly applicable synthetic methodologies for the total synthesis/chemical engineering of proteins. The 16 groups making up CBM develop research in the fields of structural, molecular and cellular biology, biomolecular engineering, chemical biology, biomedical imaging, astrobiology and theoretical biophysics. This scientific diversity as well as tight working links among groups are important features of CBM.
A broad range of large instrumentation dedicated to this multidisciplinary research is a significant characteristic of CBM. State of the art equipment and scientific and technical expertise in protein NMR, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, confocal and atomic force microscopy, flow cytometry, cellular and small animal imaging, etc., all within the same laboratory make CBM a unique place to address fundamental biological questions from an interdisciplinary point of view. Nearby facilities such as synchrotron SOLEIL or the national transgenic animal collection are also easily accessible.
CBM provides excellent working conditions in modern lab and office space. It is located on the CNRS Campus in Orleans, at the heart of the Loire valley, an area offering a superb quality of life. CBM teams benefit from the rich and diverse scientific environment of the CNRS campus, University of Orléans and local hospital, and from its proximity (~1h drive) to research centers in Tours and Paris.
Recruitment of permanent staff at CNRS (the largest French research body) is a yearly nationwide contest of candidates, with the support of a CNRS laboratory such as CBM. For the next recruitment campaign (early 2022), CBM seeks applicants who obtained their PhD after 2012 and who meet criteria for junior “Chargé de Recherche” positions (http://www.dgdr.cnrs.fr/drhchercheurs/concoursch/informer/default-en.htm). Candidates should manifest clear potential to secure national and international funding. Competitive funding schemes open to outstanding junior scientists may provide temporary alternatives to permanent positions.
Successful candidates will be offered to join an existing CBM group or to create a new group, depending on their research proposal and record of accomplishment. The offer will include laboratory and office space, access to onsite core facilities and equipment, and priority applications for PhD fellowships and other sources of local funding.
