The applicant will carry out a research project on the role of sphingolipids and specifically ceramides in airway physiology and cystic fibrosis.

Responsibilities:

  • Study novel mechanisms of CFTR regulation by membrane lipids and the impact of CFTR on intracellular and extracellular pH, bicarbonate and proton secretion, and the roles of surface liquid pH in antimicrobial activity and mucociliary transport.
  • Develop micro-methods for studying pH, design experimental protocols that involve fluorescence imaging and electrophysiological measurements, and will be expected to drive this project and break new ground.
  • Requires decision-making and the ability to troubleshoot problems in the laboratory, resolve conceptual problems in experimental design, and interpret results in the context of mathematical models.
