Assistant Professor – University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)

The Department of Biology, in conjunction with the Brain and Behavior Institute (BBI) at the University

of Maryland, College Park (UMD), seeks applications from neuroscientists working in the area of

sensory neurobiology to join us at the rank of assistant professor. The successful applicant will be

engaged in studies of auditory, olfactory, or visual neuroscience that complement existing research

programs and that capitalize on institutional research cores for high- and super-resolution light

imaging, genomic and transcriptomic analyses, and whole-animal functional imaging. Preference will

be given to applicants addressing questions relevant to sensory system development and / or aging.

Neuroscientists in the Department of Biology teach and mentor undergraduate students in the

Biological Sciences and Neuroscience majors and graduate students in the Biological Sciences,

Biophysics, and Neuroscience and Cognitive Science programs. They enjoy collaborative research

relationships with colleagues in the Departments of Psychology, Chemistry and Biochemistry,

Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Hearing and Speech Sciences, to name a few.

The successful candidate will also have a joint appointment in the BBI, an institute with approximately

150 members that was established in 2021 with the goal of fostering broad collaborations between

neuroscientists and colleagues in other disciplines, including engineering, computer science,

mathematics, physics and chemistry. Neuroscientists also benefit from close collaborative ties with

neighboring institutions (e.g. Children’s National Medical Center and the National Institutes of

Health).

Candidates should have a strong publication record in sensory neuroscience and show promise for,

or an established record of, external funding. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to

teaching and mentorship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and a commitment to

conducting open and reproducible research. Consistent with Departmental and University values,

candidates should be committed to fostering diversity and inclusion through their approaches to

research, teaching, and mentoring. A PhD in Neuroscience or related field is required at the time of

appointment.
